2017 IPMS Auction - Kansas City, MO > Session 3 - June 9 @ Following Session 2 - US

Lot #1500 - Colonial Currency > Connecticut - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
CT-160 5 Shillings May 10, 1770 Uncancelled
A scarce early Connecticut issue and one that is particularly daunting to locate in this uncancelled state. PCGS notes small edge splits, tears, tape repairs, small paper pulls on back corners. The Newman note in virtually this same grade sold for over $400.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 25
Lot #1501 - Colonial Currency > Georgia - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
GA-66b 5 Shillings 1776
One of the few nicest examples we have seen of this better crown vignette note from this Sterling issue. The Newman note was a reasonably vile Apparent VF 20 and it still sold for over $250.
Grade: XF
Lot #1502 - Colonial Currency > Georgia - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
GA-72a $2 Blue Seal 1776
Stains and small edge splits are seen by PCGS. A better variety with the blue seal floating jugs.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 30
Lot #1503 - Colonial Currency > Georgia - ($ 650.00 - $ 950.00)
GA-85 $3 1777
No resolution date. Decent XF notes come close to the $1,000 mark and this note is every bit that nice but for some mounting remnants on the back corners. The Newman price guide comes in at $2,000 in XF.
Grade: PCGS Apparent XF 40
Lot #1504 - Colonial Currency > Georgia - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
GA-114 $1 Orange Seal September 10, 1777
Although not Top Pop at the grading services, this is one of the prettiest examples we have come across. It possesses two huge margins, bold signatures, and perfect seal color. The Newman example was a paltry Fine 15 and still sold for around $900. This eminently superior piece should sell for multiples of that figure.
Grade: PCGS VF 30
Lot #1505 - Colonial Currency > Maryland - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
MD-65 $2/3 April 10, 1774
Top Pop at PMG with only a single 64 recorded at PCGS. This fractional denomination Colonial is one of the prettiest we have seen. It has superb printing quality, bold signatures and excellent centering. This same note first sold a decade ago for $1,265.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #1506 - Colonial Currency > Maryland - ($ 400.00 - $ 600.00)
MD-66 $1 April 10, 1774
A lightly circulated Maryland note with signatures of Eddis and Clapham. Housed in early generation PMG holder.
Grade: Abt. New 55 EPQ
Lot #1507 - Colonial Currency > Maryland - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
MD-69 $6 April 10, 1774
A very exciting Ch. New example from this more available Maryland Colonial series. Top Pop at PCGS and tied with one other for Top Pop at PMG. A vibrant piece boldly signed by Eddis and Clapham. Sure to be a four-figure note.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63
Lot #1508 - Colonial Currency > Maryland - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
MD-119 $5 June 28, 1780
A very well margined example for the grade. Crisp, fresh and wonderfully signed with guarantee seen on back. A tough note and not often seen above the Ch. New grade level.
Grade: PCGS New 62 PPQ
Lot #1509 - Colonial Currency > Massachusetts - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
MA-187 36 Shillings December 7, 1775 Contemporary Counterfeit
A more available denomination whose diagnostic is easy to spot as the ship's mast tilts to the right. It's eye appeal is superior to almost all that we have seen. It bears a low serial #101. PCGS notes stains.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 55
Lot #1510 - Colonial Currency > Massachusetts - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
MA-225 6 Pence October 18, 1776
At first glance this appears to be a typical 1778 codfish note that has a lower left quadrant restored. In fact it is from the first codfish issue of 1776, an issue that is prohibitively scarcer by comparison. The 1778 notes have lots of sheets that have been cut over the years to produce a plethora of high-grade pieces. This 1776 issue had no such luck and any AU or CU note is quite rare. In recent years a New 62 PPQ note sold for over $4,000 and an Apparent XF 45 sold for $1,000.
Grade: PCGS Apparent New 62
Lot #1511 - Colonial Currency > Massachusetts - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
MA-278 $1 May 5, 1780
This note has an internal tear but no hole cancel. Scarce for sure. From the Eric Engstrom Collection.
Grade: VF
Lot #1512 - Colonial Currency > Massachusetts - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
MA-280 $3 May 5, 1780
Notes from this painfully common issue are much scarcer in their original uncancelled state of preservation. Newman lists this at $1,500 in Ch. CU. In the past year we have seen a $5 note, grading PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ, sell for over $2,500. This gem is a solid four-figure note if ever there was one.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65
Lot #1513 - Colonial Currency > New Hampshire - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
NH-186 $20 April 29, 1780 Hole Cancel
A common New Hampshire series and the only one that is readily available in decent grade. With that said, this near Gem is tied for Top Pop with two others at both services for all denominations from this series. This note first sold for over $650 a decade ago and it should realize a lot more today.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #1514 - Colonial Currency > New Jersey - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
NJ-182 3 Pounds March 25, 1776
A very common New Jersey issue but these tri-color high denomination notes are a lot scarcer and certainly more highly coveted by collectors. Lightly circulated and with loads of visual appeal.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 50
Lot #1515 - Colonial Currency > New Jersey - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
NJ-213 6 Shillings 1786
A very scarce New Jersey issue and one that Newman lists at $4,000 in VF grade. So many of these are Fine with problems that this is a blessed relief. Broadly margined and with superb aesthetic appeal. The best graded note for the entire series is 30 PQ so you are not missing by much here in terms of quality. This ex: Newman note first sold for $1,175 and it should make a triumphant return to the thousand dollar threshold this evening.
Grade: PCGS VF 25
Lot #1516 - Colonial Currency > New York - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
NY-183 4 Shillings January 6, 1776 Water Works
A mere printing of 2,500 notes with the Newman catalog value at $750 in Ch. CU. This note has really wide margins and excellent centering. The Newman 8 shilling note sold for over $600 at this same grade level. PMG notes as made paper inclusions.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #1517 - Colonial Currency > New York - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,250.00)
NY-191 $1 March 5, 1776
This Colony of New York dollar bill is darkly printed on both sides, with the back appearing as it just came off of the printing press. Housed in a first generation PCGS Currency holder.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 50 PPQ
Lot #1518 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
NC-124 20 Shillings April 23, 1761
A common issue but a note in a rare grade. Top Pop at both services for this denomination and there are only four CU graded notes at both services for all denominations from the entire issue. Newman values this at $400 in VF with nothing better listed. The mentioned minor repairs must be that because they are essentially invisible through the holder.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63 Net
Lot #1519 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,200.00)
NC-136b, 138, 139 2 Shillings 6 Pence, 1 Pound, 10 Shillings December 1771 Uncut Sheet of Three
They simply do not make sheets like this anymore. The 64 PPQ grade appears to be unusually harsh when one considers that the margins, printing, signatures, embossing and overall paper quality are that of a sheet that was printed last night.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #1520 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
NC-143 5 Pounds December 1771
Easily the most challenging denomination from this issue. Bright and wonderfully signed with several back endorsements as always. Bold I. ASHE stamp is also seen.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 53 PPQ
Lot #1521 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
NC-163a $6 Goat April 2, 1776
One of the most fascinating issues in all of Colonial currency, as there are 56 distinct varieties and, to the best of our knowledge, only two complete collections have ever been assembled. There are a trio of gigantic sheet margins that add a ton to the visual impact of this piece. The Newman note graded PCGS Apparent VF 35 and sold for $564. PCGS notes small edge splits and repairs.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 30
Lot #1522 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
NC-172 $1/2 August 8, 1778
"Behold! A new World" is the motto seen on this pristine North Carolina Colonial. Top Pop at both services for this denomination and one of only four CU examples that PCGS has graded for all denominations of this series. A truly special piece.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63
Lot #1523 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
NC-184b $10 May 15, 1779
Virtue excels riches is the patriotic emblem that is seen on this broadly margined colonial. PCGS notes a small repair is noted in the upper left corner. We cannot really see it so if it is there it probably isn't much to worry about.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 53
Lot #1524 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,200.00)
PA-160 6 Shillings March 20, 1773
Top Pop at both services for all denominations in the series. This is the much scarcer first Lighthouse issue, with CU notes unknown. The Newman collection had a couple of XF notes sell for around $275 each and we have also seen a PMG AU 55 sell for close to $600. A well superior piece destined for a superior collection.
Grade: PMG Ch. Abt. UNC 58
Lot #1525 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
PA-272 20 Shillings March 16, 1785
A somewhat better later Pennsylvania issue and certainly scarcer than the plethora of 1770s era notes that are always to be found. A series for which notes are more available in lower end VF but scarce in XF and AU grades. The Newman Collection had some comparably graded XF notes from this series realize around $500-$600 each. The present offering is Top Pop at PCGS with only one better at PMG.
Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #1526 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
RI-178 2 Shillings May 3, 1775
Although noted by PMG as repaired and trimmed (the alleged trimming is a mystery), this is a very high grade example from this challenging 1775 series.
Grade: PMG Ch. VF 35 Net
Lot #1527 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
RI-264 $1/36 May 22, 1777
This lowest $1/36 note is listed in Newman for $1,500 in XF grade. A great note that is one of only four CU examples for the entire series at the grading services. Top Pop for this denomination at both services. This fractional denomination issue is a lot tougher than most casual collectors realize, especially in superior grade. A closed tear is noted by PMG but matters little.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63
Lot #1528 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
RI-284 $3 July 2, 1780
An utterly flawless example from this later Rhode Island series.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1529 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
RI-290 6 Pence May 1786
An absolutely superior piece that looks as nice as most any we have seen.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #1530 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
RI-291 9 Pence May 1786
A rather elongated example from this final Rhode Island series that is perfectly centered and which bears all of the attributes one would expect at this grade level. Tied with one other for Top Pop at both services for this denomination. Only a trio of 69 PQ notes have been graded at both services for all denominations.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 68 PPQ
Lot #1531 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
SC-101 50 Pounds June 1, 1775
The lower denomination notes from this large format series are far more available. This high denomination piece is quite scarce and, in fact, there has not been anything better than VF 30 at either grading service. The Newman value is $1,750 in VF and last year we saw a PMG VF 30 Net sell for $2,350. PMG notes repaired and reconstructed, splits.
Grade: PMG VF 25 Net
Lot #1532 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
SC-127 50 Pounds March 6, 1776
A rare high denomination note with a mere printing of 3,700 and very few survivors. This issue was authorized by the Second Provincial Congress of South Carolina. Bright and very well margined, with good detail and bold signatures. Auction appearances of this denomination are usually years apart, with the last a PCGS Apparent XF 40 that sold for over $3,000 in 2014. This note is not quite up to that standard but it shouldn't be too far off. PCGS notes there are splits, damage, repairs, design redrawn.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 20
Lot #1533 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
SC-134 $10 October 19, 1776
A scarcer note with a printing of only 2,500 and a Newman catalog value of $1,000 in VF. In recent years we have seen VF examples sell in the mid to upper hundreds of dollars.
Grade: PCGS VF 25
Lot #1534 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 900.00 - $ 1,200.00)
SC-135 $1 December 23, 1776
Remainder with Wakefield signature. Behemoth margins and stunning visual appeal are noticed from every angle. We don't see too many at this grade level. Nice 64 PQ examples routinely sell for over $500. Ex: F.C.C. Boyd, Ford.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #1535 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
SC-136a $2 December 23, 1776
Remainder with Wakefield signature. An illustrious Gem in every regard but for some staining in the right margin.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Very Ch. New 64
Lot #1536 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
SC-136a to 138a $2 to $4 December 23, 1776 Vertical Strip of Three
A really scarce multiple from this remainder issue. The only series we see as a sheet from this colony is the April 1778 issue. Multiples from this series are a tough animal and this one should fit perfectly in anyone's set.
Grade: PCGS New 62
Lot #1537 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,250.00)
SC-141 $8 December 23, 1776
This is the sole example that PCGS Currency has graded UNC to date, with PMG only having graded two examples also. This one signature remainder still retains its lovely dark inks on both sides of the note.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #1538 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
SC-141 $8 December 23, 1776 Fully Signed
A much scarcer type when fully signed and issued. This note bears four signatures and serial number. Very pretty but falling just short of the full XF grade.
Grade: PCGS VF 35
Lot #1539 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
SC-150 15 Shillings April 10, 1778
One of the much scarcer denominations from this issue that were printed on the second sheet. Notes from the first sheet are the ones that we always see in high grade. PCGS notes splits, tears, and repairs. A very scarce note no matter how you slice it.
Grade: PCGS VF 20
Lot #1540 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
SC-155 $60 February 8, 1779
Smyth, Weston and Cooke signed this bright and broadly margined note, printed by Thomas Coram. A couple of minor tears are spotted as well as a contemporary annotation. This is one of the denominations that was part of the original issuance for this series. A typical problem free AU sells for $1,500 or more.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 53
Lot #1541 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
SC-155 $60 February 8, 1779
Broad margins are seen on this bright Coram note. An issue that has always gotten Colonial Currency collectors excited. PCGS notes repairs, upper right corner replaced, design redrawn.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 25
Lot #1542 - Colonial Currency > Miscellaneous - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Robert Morris Signed Bond North American Land Company
Signed by Robert Morris, known as the "Financier of the American Revolution." Morris signed the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. Also signed by James Marshall, brother of Chief Justice John Marshall. Morris eventually landed in debtor's prison.

Lot #1544 - Continental Currency - ($ 7,500.00 - $ 15,000.00)
CC-9 $20 May 10, 1775
This is the very rare marble edge $20 issue of May 10, 1775. Current records account for 63 known notes. This note does not appear in the Track & Price census. It has excellent signatures of Tho. Bartomyiou and Sam Morris. The centering is excellent as well as the marbling.
Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #1545 - Continental Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)

Lot #1546 - Continental Currency - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)

Lot #1547 - Continental Currency - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
CC-20 $1/3 February 17, 1776
A very well printed example of this Fugio fractional denomination Continental note. It has good margins and is always popular due to the sundial on the front with motto Mind Your Business.
Grade: PCGS XF 40 PPQ
Lot #1548 - Continental Currency - ($ 3,500.00 - $ 7,000.00)
CC-21 $1/2 February 17, 1776
But for the presence of a single 66 EPQ, this would be Top Pop at PMG. High-grade Fugio fractional Continentals are always extremely desirable, as are all high-grade Continentals. If you do not believe me check the recent auction results. The Newman collection had a couple of inferior grade pieces; a PCGS AU 58 for $1,410 and a PCGS 63 PPQ for $3,760.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #1549 - Continental Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
CC-30 $8 February 17, 1776
A lightly circulated Continental note from this earlier emission. The Newman note graded PCGS AU 58 PPQ and realized over $750.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 53
Lot #1550 - Continental Currency - ($ 9,000.00 - $ 12,000.00)
CC-33 $3 May 9, 1776
Tied with a single other note for Top Pop at both grading services. This note and the other $3 in this grade both sold early last year for between $7,000-$8,000 each. The market for Superb Gem Continentals got a real boost recently as we now see how much money ravenous collectors are willing to pay for trophy pieces. It would not surprise us in the least to see this treasure scale into five-figure territory.

Lot #1551 - Continental Currency - ($ 700.00 - $ 1,200.00)

Lot #1552 - Continental Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
CC-54 $30 November 2, 1776
Astounding aesthetic appeal is seen on this highly coveted $30 Continental. A curious piece since there is supposed to be both a black and a red signature on this note. Not too many are seen with two dark signatures. Solid AU $30 notes from this series tend to sell in the upper hundreds of dollars when they appear at auction.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 55
Lot #1553 - Continental Currency - ($ 4,500.00 - $ 9,000.00)
CC-55 to 62 $2 to $30 Half Sheet of Eight Blue Counterfeit Detectors
Lightly circulated with each individual note giving the appearance of a much better grade. The margins are well above average for this type of detector sheet and both the paper quality and depth of printing are nothing short of superb. These rarely appear and we are blessed to be offering this one tonight.
Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #1554 - Continental Currency - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 6,000.00)
CC-56 $3 February 26, 1777
A superlative piece of Continental Currency from this somewhat better Baltimore issue. The low denomination from this series are particularly difficult to locate in top grade. There are jumbo margins on a couple of sides and the eye appeal cannot be denied. This note first sold in 2009, when all markets were at their nadir, for $2,185. It should sell for much more these days since Continentals have once again exploded in value.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #1555 - Continental Currency - ($ 700.00 - $ 1,400.00)
CC-57 $4 February 26, 1777
The $4 boar charging spear note is a much tougher animal to obtain in AU and CU grades from this Baltimore issue emission. Decent CU notes have sold easily over the thousand dollar barrier and nice AU examples do not lag far behind.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 55 EPQ
Lot #1556 - Continental Currency - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
CC-73 $6 April 11, 1778
A lightly handled example of this better low denomination Yorktown note. This is the scarcest of all the Continental emissions due to the early removal of notes resulting from extensive counterfeiting. Newman values this at $5,000 in CU. Most of the only higher grade notes have come recently from cut up sheets. The serial number is a cute ascending ladder. In 2015, the Newman note graded PCGS AU 58, nearly identical to the present offering, and sold for $3,290.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 53
Lot #1557 - Continental Currency - ($ 700.00 - $ 1,400.00)
CC-86 $60 September 26, 1778 Contemporary Counterfeit
Although the trained eye can easily detect this as a contemporary counterfeit, the printing quality and paper surfaces are indicative of a genuine note. These tend to sell for close to that of genuine notes, with this near Gem one of the very nicest we have come across.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #1558 - Continental Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)

Lot #1559 - Continental Currency - ($ 650.00 - $ 950.00)

Lot #1560 - Continental Currency - ($ 4,000.00 - $ 8,000.00)
CC-96 $45 January 14, 1779
A screaming Gem Continental with large margins, robust signatures and sublime paper. This intriguing odd-denomination note is only found in the final emission. The second best at either grading service with only a single 66 EPQ better. That note just sold for about $10,000 which should make our estimate appear to be rather conservative for what amounts to essentially the same look and quality.

Hartford Farmers & Mechanics Bank $5 Raised from $1
Haxby 155-R5. June 1, 1853. A really scarce type that hardly ever seems to show up at auction or in dealer showcases. PCGS notes small rust stains and pinholes, but at this grade level we can be somewhat forgiving. A vibrant piece due to the fact that this was a $1 note that was raised to the $5 denomination. The first we have seen.

The top three notes should trim to beautiful CU examples and the bottom note has a corner fold that goes through the design. We seem to see very few of these and when they do appear they are snatched right up because of their exceptional body and color.

Lot #1565 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > District of Columbia - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Alexandria Merchants Bank of Alexandria $1
Haxby DC-25-G12; Whitman DC-070-001-G030. May 25, 1815. This is a much scarcer denomination from a series frequented by $5 and $10 notes. The early engraving is quite distinctive and a choice example. This catalogs for $575 in Whitman Volume 8 and this accurately portrays how tough it is to find.
Grade: PCGS VF 25
Lot #1566 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > District of Columbia - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Alexandria Merchants Bank of Alexandria $3
Haxby DC-25-G16; Whitman DC-070-003-G050. May 25, 1815. This is the rarest denomination from the lower denomination series and has an intriguing vignette at the top center. Is this a War of 1812 Naval hero bidding farewell? That is not confirmed, but the design is quite patriotic. Whitman catalog value is $775. Note has a couple of gutter folds,

Alexandria Mechanics Bank of Alexandria $10
Haxby DC-20-G10; Whitman DC-050-010-G020. Jan. 26, 1826. This is a rare Alexandria bank and higher denomination. This bank is collected across to Virginia as well. A very attractive note with sharp pen signatures. Plated only as a proof in Whitman and presumably very rare fully signed and issued.

Lot #1571 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Georgia - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Cuthbert Banking House of John McK. Gunn $2
Jan. 1, 1861. This on Demand payable note, issued and signed, by a private banker should have been in Haxby and Whitman. Gunn was an important exchange broker and local merchant. The issuer is exceedingly rare and this example was the only one in the Dorris Collection, presenting itself well. Very beautifully engraved and orange tinted by New York Bank Note Co. Only some petty repaired edge tears are noted on this exceedingly rare note boasting sharp color.

Lot #1572 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Georgia - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
Dahlonega Pigeon Roost Mining Co. $100
August 1, 1838. The highest denomination from this Georgia gold rush issuer and exceedingly rare. The only other example we recorded is the plated note in Muscalus Georgia Local Business Notes monograph. That was also a low serial number like this example. We would presume these $100 notes were limited in issuance and most were redeemed for gold or less denomination notes. There are some repairs noted on the back by PCGS, but this faces up very nicely and was well received when sold at auction in the Alan Dorris sale a few years back. In the interim, it was displayed for a year at the Museum of American Finance in the Wall Street area. Truly, the term museum caliber piece is not hyperbole here.

Lot #1573 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Georgia - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Florence Florence Bridge Co. $3
A mysterious note that is intaglio engraved by the New England Bank Note Company with a custom vignette that is spectacularly detailed. The bridge details, mills, and workers on the rapids underneath appear similar to some of the earlier work of Terry Pelton & Co. The note is unissued, but not from a hoard. Another mystery is there is a Rosene listing for lower denominations from Alabama from the title. Well pedigreed and once from the Alan Dorris collection. Only some small edge tears noted, but very appealing and of great rarity.

Good for groceries and Queensware. This early Kansas scrip has never been seen before and there is no question this town, in the 1880s, was really the Wild West and at the heart of the Old West. It's interesting to note that the coupon was printed by Allison Coupon Co., 66 S. Illinois St., Indianapolis, IN. In 1889 a Dodge City business directory listed W.F. Dean and Frank Purdum, Groceries.

He was elected mayor in 1862 and in the Fort Scott Bulletin, on November 8, 1862, it stated there were several banking officers in town but none better. It also stated that he issued fractional notes out of necessity for lack of change. (Information obtained from the Kansas Paper Money book by Steve Whitfield.) A nice looking remainder note. Fairchild was a businessman in 1867. Jacob Englehart was a county commissioner as well. This note was merchants scrip for a dry goods store run by Jacob Englehart and R. Lot #1612 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Massachusetts - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Boston Cochituate Bank $1000
Haxby MA-130-G20; Whitman MA-400-1000-G110. Nov, 1, 1853. A very rare denomination from the most common issued obsolete note bank. The bank supposedly had funds to redeem at their closing, but instead it left us thousands of notes for the numismatic sands of time. However, there were few $500 and $1,000 notes. All auction records surveyed are over a grand for inferior notes. Conservatively graded when weighed with its exceptional eye appeal. Tight trim is typical, but virtually complete.
Grade: PCGS VF 35
Lot #1613 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Massachusetts - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
Boston Continental Bank $3
Haxby 160-G6a. A lovely note in its own right due to the bright green tint and bright paper. A note that escalates in desirability due to the evocative central vignette of a polar bear attacking a group of hunters in their boat in the midst of an icy fjord. A type that typically ranges from AU to Gem, and which sells for a few thousand dollars pretty much no matter what. Check major auction records if you are not a believer. This piece will bring plenty due to its popularity and desirability.

Boston Shoe & Leather Dealers Bank $20
Haxby MA-355-G12b Sept. 1, 1863. A beautifully engraved type that was first sold in the Newman Collection Part VI sale. Occupational titles have been collected traditionally by National Banknote collectors for decades, but this occupational title has a custom engraved, extremely wide view of an active wharf scene with a warehouse to the left and ships being loaded at the right. The note was fully issued, cancelled with some small punch holes in the signatures. The minor rust stains on back are a harsh critique for a note with this eye appeal. This originally realized $2,585 as lot 19120 in Newman Part VI auction in April, 2015.

Marblehead Marblehead Bank $5 Proof
Haxby MA-805-G146a; Whitman MA-2145-005-G200. Stunning in many respects and extremely rare. The location and bank title are eclipsed only by the few observed on Cape Cod and Nantucket. The layout, vignettes, and green color devices are fabulous on this example which is clearly superior to the Haxby-Whitman plate note. Ex Rasmussen Collection sold by Bowers & Merena where it was bought as part of the $5-$10-$20 triptych by Peter Mayer. The $10 note from this late series is the illustrious John Paul Jones vignette type. We believe there are only two other examples known, one which is harshly damaged. The Whitman catalog value understates its rarity, grade and importance since all the Marblehead color proofs were energetically pursued in the third Mayer auction from several directions.

Metropolis Advertising Note for New Town ca. 1910
A very rare advertising note for "A New Town Opportunity at Metropolis, Nevada" on the back of a facsimile 1861 Confederate $10 note. Metropolis, now a ghost town ruin in Elko County, was created by the Pacific Reclamation Company to be the center of a huge farming district. Development was handled by the Metropolis Improvement Co. of Salt Lake City, which sold lots and attracted residents. An amusement hall, train depot, modern school, post office and fantastic Metropolis Hotel, with running water and central heat, were built. But the farms did not play out, and the post office closed in 1942. All that remains are ruins of the school and hotel. A very rare item and the first Metropolis-related item we have handled.

Haxby NJ-220-G2b. Jan. 2, 1863. The Haxby Plate Note which likely was in the George Wait collection decades ago. It is another stunner that has only been in a few collections and has not been at auction for close to two decades. Winfield Scott s majestic portrait at center is accented by green frame and protectors. Fully issued and with an engraved date. The bank closed, but it seems most notes were redeemed. Looks New, but some light folds and hard to see pinholes. Rare bank and type.

Newark Newark Banking Company $1 Proof
Haxby NJ-375-Unlisted. This is similar to G2b SENC, but there is no Seropyan s Patent 1856 tint as seen on the right end imprint. As such, this is highly unusual and extremely rare. India paper on card. Only three examples surfaced from a stellar set of sheets auctioned by Stack s years ago. Few have been auctioned as individual impressions. This not only has a unique gray look, but is a riveting Gem.

Newark Newark Banking Company $2 Proof
Haxby NJ-375-G8a. A second gorgeous New Jersey proof on card. The green full tint is wondrous and the vignette balance lovely. American Bank Note Company imprint proofs were not in the 1990 Christie s sale and this example came directly from the bank archive sheet. Some would debate the conservative 64 PPQ as this clearly projects itself as a superb proof. Realistic market corrections have made Obsolete proofs such as this a tremendous value for astute and visionary collectors.

Albany Commercial Bank of Albany $2 Proof
Haxby 60-G8. An enormously margined $2 proof on this bank that looks like a '72', not a '62'. We aren't sure what the grading service sees here as the note itself appears to be without flaws or bends. The Newman $2 proof graded PCGS Apparent 64 and still sold for over $1,000. This hugely margined and problem-free piece should fare just as well.

Lot #1643 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > New York - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 6,000.00)
Brooklyn Long Island Bank $20 Proof
Haxby NY-325-Unlisted. Eric P. Newman has been adventuring in numismatic research for generations and his collecting achievements are legendary. An 1824 entry in Audubon s diary of correspondence with a Mr. Fairman was the clue to launch an investigation into the ultimate vignette riddle. Art historians and William Dillistin (surveying counterfeit detectors and bank note reporters) searched for this running grouse vignette use for years. It appears on Fairman, Draper, Underwood & Co. sample sheets and it was observed by Mr. Newman and matched to notes from two banks. The confirmed discovery of John James Audubon s running grouse engraved onto an American currency note elicited excitement in the art and paper money collecting fields. This is the first auction appearance of a note with the extremely elusive vignette since that confirmation and publication a few years ago in a 2010 paper presented at Princeton University. This bank s use of the running grouse vignette is published here for the first time as it was unobserved during the 1990 ABN auction and more recently when the Alan York estate was sold off. This beauty comes from the 1990 ABN Christie's Sale and is unique. There are no records of the bank printing or issuing $20 notes. The estimate may be conservative considering the artistic merits and history presented. The uniqueness of this $20 proof is icing on thickly layered cake.

Sag Harbor Suffolk County Bank $1
Haxby NY-2480-G2e SENC. May 1, 1844. Genuine notes from the Suffolk County Bank are rare and most were owned by one collector for decades. This full color tinted, issued note with a later "ABNCo" monogram is the most available type from the bank, yet is rarely seen for public sale. The example here surface upstate several years back and was one of the few not held by the previously mentioned Alan York or in a museum. The whaling vignette is a rarer type and was used by only a few banks. This might be superior to a similar note sold by Heritage at Long Beach last year for $3,055. Some pinholes and one larger hole away from the vignette, along with some small annotations on back with 1007 written in blue ink.

This is one of the earliest listed obsolete note types and is included in the Newman reference also (page 366 of the fifth edition). The details are much stronger than even the seldom encountered counterfeits from the series. The last offering of First Bank proofs was in Stack s 52 Collection Part I in June, 2010. This denomination was not present in that sale, but a $10 proof from the series realized $10,350 and a few higher denominations brought significantly more. Haxby 195-G4a. Dec. 2, 1861. Another Civil War era Richmond note that is scarce at this grade level. Luscious green inks abound on this very well signed and bright obsolete. We cannot recall having seen any CU examples and very few achieve this AU grade level. The last time this same note sold last year it realized about $650.

Scottsville $5 Bank of Scottsville
Haxby 215-G16b. April 18, 1861. Notes on this bank are offered infrequently at best and rarely ever at worst. Stains and repaired edge tears are noted by the grading service. A surprisingly pleasant note that will find its way into an advanced Virginia Obsolete collection.

Lot #1690 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Washington - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Puget Sound Co-Operative Colony 5˘
This colony was formed in 1887 and this note, more like stamp size, was issued for the Port Angeles Co. group. The plan was to build an ideal collective community, one of many attempted during the era. They built the first saw mill, office building, homes, schools, churches and an opera house.

Madison Dane County Bank $10 Proof
Haxby WI-365-G10. January 1, 1855. This very rare and interesting proof was sold in the first Eric P. Newman sale in April, 2015. The vignette is Yale Green, a scene that was commissioned by the City Bank of New Haven originally. This is one of two known in private hands and is beautifully framed.

Necedah Unknown Issuer 50˘
Krause 877-SC6. 185_ Remainder. Krause Plate Note. This note certainly has its share of problems such as edge and internal splits, minor edge damage and stains. The fact that it is a stone cold rarity should make on overlook such issues.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Fine 15
Lot #1694 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Wisconsin - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Sheboygan Bank of Sheboygan $2 Proof
Haxby WI-735-G4a. A colorful India paper proof and rare. This type does not have a monogram and was printed earlier than the more available remainder notes from the bank. This has an old pedigree back to Wismer (note the two side hinges on the back mentioned by PCGS), James Bookbinder, and Chet Krause. The similar example on card from the Newman Collection is getting heavy bidding strength at four-figures as this catalog goes to press. The pedigree and style certainly match up with that note.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 Apparent
Lot #1695 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Miscellaneous - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 2,500.00)
Narramore Bank Note Detector
A beautifully framed exhibit of a Narramore Bank Note Counterfeit Detector which includes a selection of late 19th and early 20th century questionable notes. We assume these notes were in this display to represent forgeries, so buy it that way. Sold AS IS.
Lot #1696 - Confederate Notes - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
T-5 $100 August 28, 1861
The "C" and "HUNDRED" overprint is as vibrant a green color as the day this note was printed. Six HPC do little to hinder the visual impact of this gorgeous note. Pretty darn well margined and with not a hint of a problem. Problemed VF examples approach the thousand dollar figure which should put this example solidly into four-figure territory.

T-16 $50 September 2, 1861 Fully Framed
Anyone who is a devotee of Confederate Currency knows that an overwhelming majority of these T-16 notes are tightly margined. This splendid piece has full margins and frame line on all sides and is also at a better grade level than the typical VF notes we find.

Lot #1705 - Confederate Items - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 1,750.00)

Lot #1707 - Confederate Notes - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
T-21 $20 September 2, 1861
A better early type that is more available up through VF grade but which becomes decidedly scarcer in XF or better condition. PCGS notes there is a masked stain near top left. Bright and colorful with pretty good margins for the type and bold signatures. This same note sold in an Heritage Auction sale a couple of years back for $587.50.
Grade: PCGS Apparent XF 40
Lot #1708 - Confederate Items - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)

Lot #1709 - Confederate Notes - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
T-24 $10 September 2, 1861
As far as T-24 notes go this is a real charmer. It possesses excellent color, it's bright and has good margins, Utterly problem free paper only adds to the aesthetic appeal of this challenging type that is so frequently found with tight margins and oxidized bronze.
Grade: PCGS VF 35
Lot #1710 - Confederate Notes - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
T-29 $10 September 2, 1861
Not quite seen with full frame line but the margin breadth is definitely above average for this typically trimmed type. The Newman note graded PCGS VF 30 and sold for $763.75.

T-31 $5 September 2, 1861
T-31 notes are so difficult to find with the PPQ/EPQ designation from the grading service. This wholesome note has good signatures, bright paper and excellent orange overprint. This year we have already seen a PCGS VF 25 PPQ sell for $1,175 and a 30 PPQ for $1,410.
Grade: PCGS VF 20 PPQ
Lot #1713 - Confederate Notes - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
T-32 $5 September 2, 1861
Although technically not fully framed it is awfully close. The margins are better than what we typically see with both eye appeal and technical grade well above average for this type. PMG notes a minor restoration but the only thing we possibly see is a lower border repaired tear. The price of these escalates from Fine to VF grade and XF notes are rare. A typical VF 30 is worth around $2,000. This shouldn't trail too far behind.
Grade: PMG VF 30

An otherwise ho hum train note except that this is signed by Confederate Captain and A.Q.M. B.F. Bomar. He was a member of the 28th Georgia Regiment and served in Company I at Camp McDonald in Georgia. A rare note as this is the only one we have seen on a train note. We have spotted one other on a Hoer note but that piece had stains.

Lot #1722 - Confederate Notes - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
T-42 $2 June 2, 1862
Whether this is a legitimate cutting error as purported by PMG, it is highly unusual and the only one we have ever seen. The note itself is a stunning Ch. CU note with black printing that practically has a cameo contrast upon blast white paper. If you are a devotee of poker, the serial number offers "sixes full of threes." Regular T-42 notes in this grade have been selling for $600-$700 recently.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63
Lot #1723 - Confederate Notes - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
T-42 $2 June 2, 1862
Bold printing is contrasted upon bright paper surfaces. A type that is rarely seen at the Gem grade level due to the ubiquitous trimmed margins seen on about all T-42 notes. We have already seen a couple of examples this year, at this same grade level, sell for around $600.

T-59 $10 April 6, 1863 Dual Issue Stamp Error
A very desirable type at this grade level with a Ch. CU look but some light corner handling. What is so intriguing about this piece is that it displays a dual July, 1863 stamp; one at upper right and a second one at lower left. This does not occur very often and when it does there is usually a frenzy to obtain one. A few years ago the Honorable William Kelly collection had a VF 30 example sell for close to $300.

This happens to be one of only three Stonewall Jackson $500's that PCGS Currency has graded at this level, with none finer. This is a beautiful example with dark inks set against the lovely pink undertint. This is certainly one that those wanting to build a high end registry set should set their sights on tonight.

Lot #1733 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
10˘ Third Issue White India Paper Proof
PMG in their infinite wisdom has declared this to be a specimen, which it is not. If they had declared it a proof they would be on target. A rare proof, printed on white India paper, with no card attached. PMG comments Previously mounted and stains. One can see the translucent mounting stains in the corners from where it used to be attached to Bristol board presumably. Likely fewer than five known. A rare Fractional Proof that should be needed by more than one collector.

The Green Sheet value is $2,900 in AU 50 with no higher grade listed. We sold the aforementioned PCGS AU 58 PPQ for over $3,200 in our Fall PCDA sale. Our estimate should prove to be quite conservative once the hammer falls.
Grade: PMG Ch. Abt. UNC 58
Lot #1762 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 6,000.00)
Series 461 $5 Replacement 9/6/46 - 3/10/47
Top Pop at both services and deserving of any accolades it receives. The only example graded by PMG was an XF 40. Auction records are sparse at best. We see a PCGS VF 25 PPQ that sold a couple of times for around $1,000 each time. This note is so vastly superior that it boggles the mind. The Green Sheet lists this at $900 in VF 20 with no higher grade listed.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #1763 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Series 471 5˘ Replacement 3/10/47 - 3/22/48
Any uncirculated Series 471 Replacement is an MPC that is to be coveted by its owner. While there are just a couple of Gems graded at the services, this is a very challenging note to locate at the CU grade level. This year we have seen a ho hum PMG VF 25 sell for $564. This bright and superbly centered piece should handily put that note's realization to shame.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #1764 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 4,000.00 - $ 8,000.00)
Series 471 25˘ Replacement 3/10/47 - 3/22/48
Tied for Top Pop and rare at this esteemed grade level. These early replacements just are not found in this well-preserved state and when they are collectors are ready to jump all over them for the opportunity to augment one's collection. The services have combined to grade a mere seven pieces. A real treasure to behold.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #1765 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 5,000.00 - $ 10,000.00)
Series 471 50˘ Replacement 3/10/47 - 3/22/48
Top Pop at both services combined. Only five of these half dollar replacements have been seen by the grading services. This is a great note in a great grade. An opportunity that will likely not present itself for a very long time. Trepidation is the collector's foe.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #1766 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Series 471 $5 3/10/47 - 3/22/48
Always a desirable early MPC high denomination note. It wields strong colors and fresh paper.
Grade: PCGS VF 20
Lot #1767 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 12,500.00 - $ 17,500.00)
Series 471 $10 Replacement 3/10/47 - 3/22/48
Tied with one other for Top Pop at both services combined, with this being the only example seen by PCGS. Auction records are few and far between. In 2009 we saw an AU note sell for $8,625. The Green Sheet deserves an "Atta Boy!!" for their acumen in valuing notes: VG $5,000, Fine $6,000, VF $7,000....Gem CU $9,000. If you have a child in elementary school show them that pattern with the numerical grade and listed price and you can be pretty sure they will pick out which one does not fit the pattern. Any MPC Registry set or any serious MPC collector absolutely needs this note in this grade to be able to hold his head high and beam with pride. Barring the pricing headwinds resulting from a nefarious cabal, this piece of eye candy should easily transcend the five-figure plateau.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #1768 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Series 472 5˘ Replacement 3/22/48 - 6/20/51
Top Pop at PMG and tied with one other at PCGS. A splendid piece of Military scrip that is as fresh and bright as the day it was printed. We have recently seen a PMG Ch. CU 64 EPQ sell for over $750.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1769 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Series 641 50˘ 8/31/65 - 10/21/68 Replacement
Only one better at either service for this bright and colorful later issue replacement. While we do see some of these in high grade the only other recent auction record we can find at this same grade level was a scarcer second printing note that sold for $2,350 a couple of years ago.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1770 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,250.00)
Series 641 $10 8/31/65 - 10/21/68 Replacement
Top Pop at both grading services. A $10 MPC replacement note that is not scarce in absolute terms but which is quite rare at this grade level. If you want a F/VF example you have your pick. If you want the best then this is it. The Green Sheet lists this at $1,875 in Ch. CU 63 with nothing better. The only other auction result we are finding at this level was a Ch. CU 63 PPQ note that brought over $2,000 several years ago.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #1771 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 700.00 - $ 1,400.00)
Series 661 $20 10/21/68 - 8/11/69
Very scarce at this grade level as evidenced by the Green Sheet valuation of $850 in Ch. CU 63 and $1,000 in Gem 65. Over the years we have seen a couple of Gems sell for healthy four-figure prices and this is just slightly below that level of quality.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #1772 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Series 701 $5 Unissued
Second Printing. Portrait of Thomas Edison, inventor extraordinaire, seen at right. In our PCDA sale this year we sold a PMG Gem CU 66 EPQ for over $1,100. This note should easily best that figure.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #1773 - Stocks and Bonds - ($ 200.00 - $ 500.00)
Fourth Liberty Loan $50 1918
Framed. This 1918 $50 Fourth Liberty Loan carried a 4-1/4% interest rate, and would have started with coupon #5. This issue has the distinction of being the only federal bond issue within American history to default on its terms. The Fourth Liberty Loan was to be payable, "in United States gold coin of the present standard of value." However, in 1933 Congress passed House Joint Resolution 192 which suspended payment in gold, a year before the Fourth Liberty Loan was to be called. Despite a legal challenge to the default, (wherein the Supreme Court acknowledged a violation of the 14th Amendment), the Fourth Liberty Loan was not redeemed at the original terms of its issuance. The high court felt that to pay bondholders at a 1918 gold value would be an unjust enrichment. Between 50 - 100 examples likely exist of this denomination. Donated from The Joe I. Herbstman Memorial Collection of American Finance to the SPMC.
Lot #1774 - Stocks and Bonds - ($ 1,400.00 - $ 2,000.00)
U.S. Treasury Bond $1,000 Bearer 3-1/2%
This bond was issued in 1958 and all coupons are trimmed away.

Lot #1776 - Panic Scrip - ($ 350.00 - $ 600.00)

This was 1907 Panic script but these are both unsigned. Scarce and seldom seen. From the Eric Engstrom Collection. Two piece lot.

Wichita, KS Clearing House Assoc. $1 & $5
The $1 is dated August 3, 1914. A very rare Panic scrip issue. The $5 mate is dated November 2, 1907. The 1907 note has written 'redeemed and cancelled, June 3, 1950'. I have never seen this pair before. Formerly from the W.G. Miller, Jr. Collection.

A much scarcer star FRBN with a printing of a mere 24,000. A solid VF note is actually quite desirable for the Philadelphia district. The Jones example that just sold was only a Fine 15, far lesser than this note.

With the exception of the five dollar note, Dallas FRBNs are simply as rare as hen's teeth in uncirculated condition. Embossing can easily be seen through the holder, leaving one to wonder why the EPQ modifier is missing on this scarce beauty.

Fr. 512 $50/$100 1882BB Double Denomination Error
Kansas City, Aetna NB, 4251
This note is truly an amazing story of survival as it carries a plate date of March 10, 1890 and the bank was liquidated just three years later during the Depression of 1893. During this era there were a number of short-lived institutions that popped up across the city. This institution issued only 460 sheets of notes that each contained one $50 and one $100 Brown Back. Low and behold this amazing note has both, a $50 face and a $100 back so the sheet got flipped before the sides were matched. No other examples are known from this location, either regular or double denominations. There has been only one other occurrence of a double denomination $50/$100 Brown Back being found and that was from the New Mexico Territory. That note is now in the collection of the ANA Museum. Creating a singular opportunity for more than one reason to acquire such a rarity. PMG notes: restoration.

Lot #1956 - Error Notes > Giori Test Note - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Giori Test Note Inverted Back Triple Serial Number Error
A fascinating item in every sense of the word. This Giori test note was printed in West Germany in the 1950s and has what is known as the "German Back." This note also has watermark along the bottom edge. The ones with Washington portrait at center are far more common than this type with Jefferson head at center. All Jefferson head Giori notes have an inverted back. So what makes this note so darn interesting is the serial number placement. Many of these Giori with inverted backs do not have serial numbers to begin with, so the ones with number are a lot scarcer. All of the auction results that we have been able to glean with inverted back and serial number all had only a single number. This note has a trio of different serial numbers placed at far left middle, left bottom, and far right middle. What is equally as fascinating is that all of the other examples we have viewed had the serial number and design imprint aligned the same; so serial number on face both upright or inverted serial number on inverted back. All three of these serial numbers are upright on the inverted back. That alone makes this a unique item that should prove immensely popular with the bevy of error note collectors out there.

Fr. 1651 $5 1934-A E-A Separated Piece
This note came from an old-timer, a hunter-trapper in northern Wisconsin who got the note new from a bank in the 1960s and immediately noticed "a piece fell off". Even though the teller offered to replace it with a perfect note, the fellow decided to keep the note, which he carried in his pocket and wallet, winning many barroom bets that he had a US note worth $4.75. We sold a much more dramatic example of this R-9 error in our PCDA sale in March of 2017 for more than $10,500. We don't expect this piece to bring that lofty amount, but this is a $5 Silver, not a modern $1 FRN. Another note from this sheet was sold by a West Coast dealer for a five-figure sum several years ago. This note has not been to either service, but we expect them to grade it.

Fr. 1935-E $2 1976 Richmond E-A Inverted Overprint Type I
The 'stopper' to a denomination set of inverts and this stunning Deuce is certainly among the finest. This inverted overprint error offers collectors the opportunity to build a denomination set (including the $2) without breaking the bank. Although Choice examples appear from time to time, very few certified Gem New notes exist. Ex: Trade Mart Currency Collection. Cost in 2012 was $2,760.

Fr. 1935-H $2 1976 St. Louis H-A Missing First Printing
Missing from all but the greatest collections. In fact, one collector in the Midwest with nearly unlimited resources, adequate time, and exposure to many of the finest errors to ever cross the block still lacks a blank back $2. All known examples surfaced in a bank in northwest Indiana in the late 1990s when the head teller was cleaning out the old supply of 1976s to create room for the new issue of 1995s to stagnate. In 2004, one collector was offered $25,000 for a blank back Deuce and this cataloger was unable to secure even a single example. Ex: DPC-Lawndale Collection. Cost in 2013 was $4,600.
