2017 US Auction August 25 @ 5 PM & 26 @ 3 PM > 2017 August Auction - Session 1 - August 25 @ 5 PM

Lot #1 - Colonial Currency > Connecticut - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
CT-167 20 Shillings October 10, 1771 Uncancelled
A much tougher early Connecticut note that is quite daunting in this uncancelled state of preservation. Edge splits, hinge repairs, minor mounting remnants noted by PCGS.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 30
Lot #2 - Colonial Currency > Connecticut - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
CT-173 40 Shillings June 1, 1773 Uncancelled
Ch. AU is an exceptional grade for this 1773 issue. What is even more exceptional is that the note is also seen here in its original uncancelled state. So many of these are slash cancelled or pen cancelled. PMG notes hinged, which is primarily confined to the back. A truly worthy piece to gain entry into any proud Colonial currency collection.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 55
Lot #3 - Colonial Currency > Connecticut - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
CT-214 2 Pence October 11, 1777 Uncancelled
These small change notes are far scarcer in this uncancelled state than are a lot of the other 1770s issued notes. Pristine with bold red inks.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58
Lot #4 - Colonial Currency > Georgia - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
GA-85 $3 1777 No Resolution Date
EF is a much better grade for this $3 Georgia Colonial. Listed in Newman at $2,000 in XF 40.
Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #5 - Colonial Currency > Maryland - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
MD-2 1 Shilling 6 Pence 1733 Complete Sheet
Lightly handled and quite desirable as a complete remainder sheet. The only readily obtainable pre-1767 Maryland Colonials.
Grade: Ch. AU
Lot #6 - Colonial Currency > New York - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
NY-182 2 Shillings Water Works January 6, 1776
Excellent margins and centering are duly noted on this pretty Water Works note. Light handling primarily confined to the corners.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58
Lot #7 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
NC-139 1 December 1771
A painfully common note but not so available at this nearly superb grade level.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #8 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
NC-163a $6 Goat April 2, 1776
One of the most fascinating issues in all of Colonial currency, as there are 56 distinct varieties and, to the best of our knowledge, only two complete collections have ever been assembled. There are a trio of gigantic sheet margins that add a ton to the visual impact of this piece. The Newman note graded PCGS Apparent VF 35 and sold for $564. PCGS notes small edge splits and repairs.
Grade: PCGS VF 30
Lot #9 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 50.00 - $ 100.00)
PA 202 18 Pence April 25, 1776
This note has some flaws.
Grade: VF
Lot #10 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
SC-149 10 Shillings April 10, 1778
A superb Gem South Carolina Colonial with good signatures, bold printing and bright paper. This same note sold a couple of years ago for way too little money and it brought over $800 at that. Gems from this southern colony almost always broach the four-figure mark.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65
Lot #11 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
SC-155 $60 February 8, 1779
The $60, $80, and $100 notes are seen with far less frequency than the $50, $70 and $90 notes. This one has great margins and centering, as well as solid visual appeal. PCGS notes repairs, upper right corner replaced and design redrawn.
Grade: PCGS VF 25
Lot #12 - Continental Currency - ($ 700.00 - $ 1,400.00)
CC-10 $30 May 10, 1775
Although not scarce in the absolute sense, this is the highest denomination Continental from this first emission and it has always carried a much higher value than some of the more common notes. We have recently seen these selling in the upper hundreds in AU condition.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 50
Lot #13 - Continental Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
CC-21 $1/2 February 17, 1776
Bold red signature and serial number attest to the desirability of this fractional denomination Fugio Continental.
Grade: PMG VF 30
Lot #14 - Continental Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
CC-41 $4 July 22, 1776
A much tougher $4 note from this significantly scarcer July 1776 Continental emission. The boar charging spear vignette is crystal clear and the signatures well accomplished.
Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #15 - Continental Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
CC-93 $30 January 14, 1779
A wonderfully printed Continental from this final emission. Deep printing and boldly executed signatures only add to its allure.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55
Lot #16 - Continental Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)

Lot #22 - Confederate Items - ($ 7,500.00 - $ 15,000.00)

Grade: PMG VF 30
Lot #23 - Confederate Items - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,200.00)
T-16 $50 September 2, 1861
A really well margined example of this early Confederate type with portrait of Jefferson Davis. Nearly fully framed but not completely. We just sold a PMG XF 45 for close to $650 and that note lacked the PQ designation.
Grade: PCGS XF 45 PPQ
Lot #24 - Confederate Items - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)

Lot #27 - Confederate Items - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)

Lot #30 - Confederate Items - ($ 125.00 - $ 250.00)

Lot #35 - Confederate Items - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)

Grade: PMG UNC 62
Lot #36 - Confederate Items - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
T-34 $5 1861
The note is trimmed tight at the bottom, otherwise it's evenly circulated. PMG notes: previously mounted, annotations.
Grade: PMG VF 25 Net
Lot #37 - Confederate Items - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
T-38 $2 September 2, 1861
This is an exemplary piece for the type. It is fully framed on all sides and has generally oversized margins compared to most T-38 notes we encounter. PMG notes a restoration which is confined to a small area of the back. The Newman note was a PCGS 55 Apparent and sold for about $2,000.
Grade: PMG VF 25 Net
Lot #38 - Confederate Items - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
T-39 $100 1862
A high quality note with slight paper burn from the ink. PMG notes: small tear.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63
Lot #39 - Confederate Items - ($ 125.00 - $ 250.00)

Lot #40 - Confederate Items - ($ 700.00 - $ 1,400.00)
T-41 $100 October 26, 1862
A very high grade example of this Hoer note with PMG noting a pinhole. Manuscript endorsements of Major J.F. Cummings adds a lot to the value of this piece. AU notes have been selling for several hundred dollars.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #41 - Confederate Items - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
T-42 $2 1862
Excellent paper for the grade. PMG notes: minor rust.
Grade: PMG VF 25

These are seldom seen in UNC. PMG notes: stain.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63
Lot #44 - Confederate Items - ($ 225.00 - $ 375.00)
T-60 $5 April 6, 1863
A more common type but one that we generally don't see at this grade level. Some ink erosion is noted from the signature in the top margin.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 Net
Lot #45 - Confederate Items - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
T-64 $500 September 17, 1864 Dark Red High Number

Lot #47 - Confederate Items - ($ 400.00 - $ 600.00)
T-65 $100 1864
A deep red note with and ad on the back for a Richmond coin and relics dealer. PMG notes: advertisement on back.
Grade: PMG VF 30
Lot #48 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)

An exceptionally well centered example of this green back Clark type.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #49 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1242 10˘ First Issue Block of Eight Notes
A complete sheet has 20 notes and this is a block of eight notes. Not scarce by any stretch of the imagination but nowhere near as common as the 5˘ sheets from the first issue.
Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #50 - Fractional Currency - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
Fr. 1247 10˘ Second Issue
This number, with "1" and "18-63" surcharges, is much tougher to locate, particularly in higher grade.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63 PPQ
Lot #51 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
Fr. 1251 10˘ Third Issue
Another lovely Gem Fractional in our sale this evening. Bold, fiery red inks and highlighted by bright bronzing. The combination of margin size and centering lends credence to the assigned grade. PMG comments "great color."
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65
Lot #52 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1255 10˘ Third Issue
An enormously margined and perfectly centered example of this more common Fractional type. Green Sheet at this elite grade level is $700.
Grade: Superb Gem CU
Lot #53 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1279 25˘ First Issue
A very popular perforated type note with gigantic margins on all sides and perfect color. There is a full strip seen at the bottom and even PMG was impressed, giving the comment "nice perforations."
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #54 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1292 25˘ Third Issue
Boardwalk margins and cavernous embossing give this Gem red back Fessenden note the look of an even better grade. The Fr. 1291 type note is far more available in Gem grade than this variety with "a" on face position indicator. Green Sheet is $350 at this grade level for the common Fr. 1291.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #55 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1294 25˘ Third Issue
Crisp paper and bright bronze attest to the Gem grade assigned by PCGS. While other cross-sections of the currency market are floundering, Gem quality Fractionals are not one of those areas.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #56 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1297 25˘ Third Issue
But for a smaller top margin this fiber paper Fessenden would have achieved a much better grade. This fiber paper subtype, Fr. 1297-1300, are very desirable for even the open surcharge types.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63 PPQ
Lot #57 - Fractional Currency - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1307 25˘ Fourth Issue
A real charmer of a Fractional note, showing balanced margins and superior printing. A very popular type at the Gem grade level but particularly more difficult to obtain for this variety with smaller seal and blue right end. PCGS has only graded a pair of 66s above this aesthetically charming example.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #58 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1310 50˘ First Issue
Perforated Fractional notes are among the most popular types to collect. This 50˘ denomination example has good margins and vivacious ink colors.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63 EPQ
Lot #59 - Fractional Currency - ($ 325.00 - $ 575.00)
Fr. 1311 50˘ First Issue
A really nice example of this much better perforated, no monogram Fractional. Likely the second scarcest of the first issue Fractionals.
Grade: PMG Ch. Abt. UNC 58 EPQ
Lot #60 - Fractional Currency - ($ 100.00 - $ 150.00)
Fr. 1312 50˘ First Issue
This note has a sheet fold from before it was cut.
Grade: Ch. AU
Lot #61 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1329 50˘ Third Issue
A much better Spinner type with autographed signatures of Allison and Spinner. We rarely encounter Gems of this number so a healthy near Gem is about as good as it gets. Well signed and boldly printed.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #62 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1358 50˘ Third Issue
A more than acceptable green back Justice note that is perfect for the type. Good margins are found on all sides except for at the top. The Green Sheet at this grade level is $330.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63
Lot #63 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1369 50˘ Third Issue
A far better Justice variety with widely spaced surcharges and "a" on face position indicator. Nice AU notes are typically as good as it gets because CU examples are stone cold rarities. In the past year we have seen a few AUs sell at an average price of around $625 each
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 55
Lot #64 - Fractional Currency - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1374 50˘ Fourth Issue
Quite possibly the most popular of the Fractional types. A screaming gem but for the average bottom margin. Green Sheet asking price is $715 at this grade level.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63
Lot #65 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1381 50˘ Fifth Issue
A hugely margined Crawford note with great centering and wonderful color. An ever-popular type due to his resemblance to Bob Hope.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #66 - Error Notes > Colonial Notes - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
NJ-158 30 Shillings December 31, 1763 Back Misalignment Error
A note that has a lot going for it. This is one of the much scarcer red and black high denomination notes from this otherwise common 1763 issue. PCGS has noted the center split repaired. The allure of this note is the the back is heavily misaligned to a degree that we have not seen. It is dramatically shifted down and to the right with a corresponding piece of the next note seen at the top. In decades of dealing in and observing currency, we can honestly say that this is a rare Colonial error type. Not noted as an error on the holder but we will let the bidders decide.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Fine 12
Lot #67 - Error Notes > Depression Scrip - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Newberry Bank of Newberry Cashier's Check $1 Cutting Error in LR Corner
Shafer FL300-1d. 1933 Remainder. These are very desirable pieces and hardly seemed to show up until Newman blessed us with his presence in the market place. These 1933 Depression Scrip notes were quite varied with this being the green ink variety. The Newman example graded a point less and sold for $258.50. Not only is this example visually flawless but it has a cutting error in the lower right corner.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #68 - Error Notes > Confederate Notes - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
T-68 $10 February 17, 1864 Mismatched Serial Numbers
A woefully common note but the only mismatched serial number that we can recall having seen. Mismatched plate letters definitely are seen but not this error. The left serial is #41823 and the right serial is # 41824. A unique type of error that is destined to find a new home with any serious Confederate or Error collector.
Grade: F/VF

Lot #70 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 225.00 - $ 375.00)
Fr. 2020-B $10 1969-B New York B-D Ink Smears on Face
An excellent example of a scarcer 1969-B series note in top caliber grade. Add to that the fact that there are ink smears on the face and you have quite a find.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #71 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 2073-J $20 1981 Kansas City J-C Gutter Folds

A real treasure of a note to find in this state of preservation. Bright and with excellent margins and centering. A prize piece that should please the fussiest of collectors. The B-A block is a far scarcer animal than the typically seen A-A block, by a factor of 4 to 1. We just saw the Jeff Jones piece in a 66 EPQ holder fall a hair short of the $2,000 mark.

Lot #88 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 1,100.00 - $ 1,800.00)
Fr. 1601* $1 1928-A* *-A

Fr. 1860-H $10 1929 St. Louis #H00663322A
This note has a great deal going for it. It is a better St. Louis district note and one that is in a very high grade. PMG has only graded one better and PCGS only two better. Bright and perfectly centered with bold printing contrast. Fancy serial #H00663322A will greatly augment its value. We expect multiple bidders to vault past our conservative estimate during the opening moments of bidding.

Lot #161 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,400.00)

Lot #163 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 600.00 - $ 900.00)

Lot #171 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 15,000.00 - $ 30,000.00)
Fr. 259 $5 1886 #B10
This is a rare and underrated Silver Dollar Back with only 47 serial numbers recorded, with this jewel making the new total at 48 serial numbers recorded. Prior to this offering the lowest known serial number was #B14 and it sold in May 2006 by Goldberg's at $21,850 in '45'. Serial #B24 has received a grade of PMG 65 EPQ and is listed on eBay at $93,000. My only question would be why not 'PPQ' on this note as it's very fresh with a corner tip fold.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58
Lot #172 - Large Size Type Notes > Treasury Notes - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
Fr. 359 $5 1890
This is a lovely ornate back with small splits mentioned, they are very minor and noted for accuracy. These only appear every other year or so in this grade.
Grade: PCGS VF 25
Lot #173 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)

Lot #175 - National Bank Notes > Connecticut - ($ 325.00 - $ 575.00)

Fr. 1800-1 $5 1929T1
New London, NB of Commerce of New London, 666
Always an ominous note due to its apocalyptic charter number. The centering is excellent and the ink colors remain bold while fresh paper abounds. CAA first sold this note about 20 years ago for $250.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63 EPQ    Bank Name: New London, NB of Commerce of New London, 666
Lot #177 - National Bank Notes > Hawaii - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 6,000.00)
Fr. 1800-2 $5 1929T2
Honolulu, Bishop First NB, 5550
One of the couple highest graded examples that we can find in the NBN census and an ever-popular example for numerous reasons. It is a great grade for a state capital set or just for any 50 state set in general. A typical lower end VF usually sells for around $400 but these are quite available at that grade level. As luck would have it, we sold this exact same note in our 2012 Memphis sale where it realized the princely sum of $4,140. It would not surprise us to see it venture into that solid four-figure territory once again.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64    Bank Name: Honolulu, Bishop First NB, 5550
Lot #178 - National Bank Notes > Illinois - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1800-1 $5 1929T1
Quincy, Quincy-Ricker NB & TC, 3752
When the Ricker NB liquidated in 1923 it was absorbed by the Quincy NB. Type One notes only were issued for this bank. Although this bank is available, we rarely encounter nice Ch. CU examples.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63 EPQ    Bank Name: Quincy, Quincy-Ricker NB & TC, 3752
Lot #179 - National Bank Notes > Illinois - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)

Grade: F/VF    Bank Name: Vermilion, First NB, 10365
Lot #180 - National Bank Notes > Indiana - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Fr. 1802-1 $20 1929T1
South Bend, First NB, 126
A note that is always immensely popular due to the fact that the University of Notre Dame is in town. Originally chartered in 1863, the bank liquidated in 1932, thereby issuing Type One notes only during the small size issuing era. We rarely encounter Gems via the auction venue and whenever they do avail themselves prices continue to escalate. A dozen years ago we sold the "F" position note of this serial number for $575.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ    Bank Name: South Bend, First NB, 126
Lot #181 - National Bank Notes > Iowa - ($ 700.00 - $ 1,400.00)
Fr. 1802-1 $20 1929T1
Boone, First NB, 3273
A tough Boone County note and one of the nicest we have seen. The only other recent result we see is a Fine that brought over $300 a couple of months ago.
Grade: PMG Ch. VF 35    Bank Name: Boone, First NB, 3273
Lot #182 - National Bank Notes > Iowa - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1800-2 $5 1929T2
Corning, Okey-Vernon NB, 8725
One of only four private name banks found in the Hawkeye state. Abundant margins and good centering give this the look of a better grade.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ    Bank Name: Corning, Okey-Vernon NB, 8725
Lot #183 - National Bank Notes > Iowa - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1802-1 $20 1929T1
Davenport, First NB, 15
A great example to find a home in any first 100 charter collection. This same note first sold for about $150 in a CAA sale 20 years ago. It will realize much more this evening.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63 EPQ    Bank Name: Davenport, First NB, 15

Fr. 650 $20 1902ND
Cedar Vale, Citizens NB, 6530
Excellent pen signatures of Miller and Shaver are found on this abundantly margined note. The census is in the single digits for this much better bank note. A note that should rightfully grade VF/XF.
Grade: VF ++    Bank Name: Cedar Vale, Citizens NB, 6530
Lot #187 - National Bank Notes > Kentucky - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1802-1 $20 1929T2
Pikeville, First NB, 6622
A real treasure of a piece that will fit perfectly into any high grade 50 state collection. The margins are broad on all sides and the embossing is razor sharp. This same note first sold for over $400 a decade ago. The "B" position note with the same serial number graded PMG 64 (without EPQ) and realized about $500 a half dozen years ago. With some simple extrapolation we conclude the price realized today will be......

Boston, Tremont NB, 625
A scarce Boston bank that did not make it into the 20th century, issuing only First and Second Charter notes. There are 22 First Charter Aces and Deuces listed with this being the only Second Charter note known on the bank. Rare and desirable and certainly a must-have for any Boston collector.

Marlborough, Peoples NB, N2404
One of only three $5 Second Charter Date Backs on this better Middlesex County bank. A much better type and the only note to be auctioned in recent times. In 2009 a problemed VG/Fine piece sold for over $600 and this note is far better. PCGS notes minor fading of overprint and a small paper pull on back.
Grade: PCGS VF 25    Bank Name: Marlborough, Peoples NB, N2404

Just a lovely example of this Gettysburg bank that has a small cluster of pinholes at the far right. Aside from that, the note is a stunning XF piece with bright paper, exceptional margins and plenty of originality. In our PCDA sale earlier this year we sold a $5 note on this bank in a PMG VF 25 holder about $825. This note is vastly superior in every way.

A pithy nine examples are enumerated in the census with this being listed as the second finest. It could easily be the finest because the one listed as XF has not been seen since the early 80s in a Hickman & Oakes sale. Lot #301 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Series 641 $10 Replacement 8/31/65 - 10/21/68
Top Pop at both grading services. A $10 MPC replacement note that is not scarce in absolute terms but which is quite rare at this grade level. If you want a F/VF example you have your pick. If you want the best then this is it. The Green Sheet lists this at $1,875 in Ch. CU 63 with nothing better. The only other auction result we are finding at this level was a Ch. CU 63 PPQ note that brought over $2,000 several years ago.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #302 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)

Series 691 $20 Pair Unissued #D00070000D & #D00080000D
A really special MPC low serial number pair that has all zeroes but for one digit in the middle. We really rarely ever seen something like this and it is a real treat. PCGS notes stains on back, which are really more like toning than staining.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55 & PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58

Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #309 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 700.00 - $ 1,400.00)
Series 692 $20 Replacement 10/7/70 - 3/15/73
A condition sensitive replacement with very few ever reaching the CU grade levels. Even nice AU notes such as this one are incredibly scarce. It looks Ch. CU through the holder. Earlier this year we sold a PMG XF 40 with pinholes and rust for almost $450.
Grade: PMG Ch. Abt. UNC 58
Lot #310 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 900.00 - $ 1,300.00)
Series 701 $5 Unissued
In our Spring PCDA sale we sold another example at this exact PMG Gem CU 66 EPQ grade level for about $1,125. This extravagant piece, bearing the portrait of Thomas Edison, should perform just as well.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ

Newberry Bank of Newberry Cashier's Check $2
Shafer FL300-2. 1933 Remainder. A much scarcer brown background type. The margins on this note are more indicative of the "68" grade than the "64" grade. The Newman collection basically accounts for the only examples seen recently.

Cumberland Chesapeake & Ohio Canal - Geo. G. McPherson 6-1/4˘
Shank 24.9.1. May 1, 1838. Remainder. Trace circulation is detected on this desirable odd fractional denomination piece. This is easily the nicest we have ever seen and it should bring a lot of money as advanced Maryland collectors push the price through the roof.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 50
Lot #324 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Maryland - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Cumberland Chesapeake & Ohio Canal - Geo. G. McPherson 75˘

Lonaconing William Alexander 10˘
Shank 73.1.2. August 15, 1837. Simply an absolutely rare piece of Maryland scrip from the Hard Times era. We have never seen one, neither has Heritage nor Stacks. A great note that should make our estimate seem foolish.
Grade: PCGS Fine 15
Lot #327 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Maryland - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Sykesville William N. Dorsey & Bros. 50˘
Shank 132.1.6. July 20, 1840. Yet another rare signed and issued Maryland Obsolete note that we are offering in this sale. PCGS notes some small rust stains which do little to impinge upon the aesthetic charms wielded by the 175 year old note. Between the three major currency auction houses this is the only example that we can find. Certain to make a big splash once bidding commences.
Grade: PCGS VG 10
Lot #328 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Massachusetts - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
Boston Continental Bank $3
Haxby 160-G6a. A lovely note in its own right due to the bright green tint and bright paper. A note that escalates in desirability due to the evocative central vignette of a polar bear attacking a group of hunters in their boat in the midst of an icy fjord. A type that typically ranges from AU to Gem, and which sells for a few thousand dollars pretty much no matter what. Check major auction records if you are not a believer. This piece will bring plenty due to its popularity and desirability.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55

Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 53 Net

Detroit State Bank of Michigan $1, $3, $5
Haxby MI-160 G2a, G6a, G8a. Remainders. Always a cool series due to the colorful nature of the notes as well as the use of the Lyman Protector method of counterfeit prevention.
Grade: PMG Graded
