Two piece lot and a postcard of the engine 'General'. One of the most dramatic incidents of the Civil War was the 'Andrews Raid', April 12, 1862, and the ensuing 'Great Locomotive Chase'. Briefly, James Andrews led a party of Union spies and captured the engine General, then proceeded North with the intent of destroying bridges and RR tracks. In this they were partially successful. However, the train's crew, led by Conductor William Fuller, pursued the raiders, first on foot for a few miles, then on a push car, and finally by the engine Texas, so that the Yankees were unable to do much damage and, after a long chase, ran out of fuel, and were captured. Today, the engine General is on display in the museum at Kennesaw, GA., and the engine Texas at the Atlanta Cyclorama. These two notes were signed by Wm. Grisham who was also a clerk at the Dahlonega Mint, 1844-49.

Mansfield, The Richland & Huron Bank $3
A nice $3 note, dated 18 Dec, 1816, from this bank that opened in December 1816 and failed soon after. There is a printing crease running across the top half of the note. This note is listed as a R-5 in the Wolka Ohio reference, suggesting that 11 to 25 examples are known. This bank failed due to a number of lawsuits filed against it seeking payment on the issued notes . The bank president, John Garrison, had to sell many of his personal belongings to satisfy the claims. Ex. the Early American History Mail Bid Auction, August 26, 2000, Lot # 760.
