Lot #67588 - Confederate Notes - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Chemicograph Set in Unopened Envelope
A set of six Chemicograph backs with designs that were intended for the 1864 issues of the $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, and $500 denominations. Back plates with these designs were ordered by the Confederate Treasury from S. Straker & Sons of London. Multiple shipments were made but none made it to the South. The plates were then found 75 years later and prints were made. These are included in the original Chase envelope from 1959. These sell very well individually but it is a rare treat to get an unopened envelope. We last sold this in our IPMS sale for $450.
Grade: Gem CU

Grade: LCG Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #67591 - Fractional Currency - ($ 325.00 - $ 575.00)
Fr. 1243SP 10c First Issue Wide Margin Pair
An absolutely stunning wide margin pair. The face specimen is a lovely UNC example and the back is a lightly handled Ch. AU. In this day and age, you will be hard-pressed to find a wide margin pair with more frame lines. The face has two full frame lines at top and right. Not to be outdone, the back specimen has three full frame lines. For those who are new to all of this, wide specimens with all four full frame lines are a near impossibility to find. A great specimen pair.

Two-digit low serial numbers of the $1 1923 Silver Certificates are quite scarce, far more so than low serial numbered $1 1899 Silvers. This specific note has no track record at auction, but a comparison of other low serial numbers will be helpful: The #A27D sold for $126 though Lyn Knight in 1991, the #A23D sold for $220 through CAA in 1998 and the #A18D sold for $822 on 8/12/2015 at Stacks/Bowers. All three are listed as '63' in the Track & Price census. This #A28D should grade at least '63' or better.

Track & Price shows far fewer series 1923 low serial numbers having been sold than those from the 1899 series. This gorgeous note bears serial #K42B and has been graded Gem New 66 PPQ by Legacy Grading Service.

Fr. 682 $50 1902ND
Reno, NB, P8424
This $50 Nevada is new to the Track & Price census and it's the seventeenth $50 known on this charter; most any other $50s known are on Winnemucca. There are just over 100 large notes reported on this Washoe County bank and Reno was the big early Nevada city. I assume the high denominations were needed for the miners or assayers in the area but it seems that gambling was also an early need for cash. This was the first note that Zollie Kelman paid a premium for at $65, $15 over face value, around 1952 at the Jewelry Exchange, likely in the Twin Cities. Somewhat rounded corners but excellent black signatures. There is some edge wear as well.

Fr. 565 $50 1882DB
Albuquerque, First NB, W2614
A new addition to the census of New Mexico National Bank Notes is this, the eighth $50 1882 Date Back to be reported. It appears the none of the known notes is better than this example with its clearly stamped purple signatures. The note bears the date of January 6, 1912 which coincides with the admission to the Union as our 47th state. The overall paper quality is good although the margins could be just a touch more equal, top to bottom. We sold a similar note in 2016 at $7,050 and who knows when the next opportunity will arise. There is likely an interesting story behind the need for these high denomination notes over 100 years ago.

Winston, Wachovia NB, 2425
For a period of time in the 1980-2000 the Wachovia Bank had risen to one of America's largest banking institutions. This bank was one of the state's most valuable and hardest to acquire. There are now, with this example, just nine large notes reported. I believe from the census that this note should be slightly better than other graded examples. Excellent black signatures along with unmolested paper, centering and originality. The note was obtained from the great grand-niece of the cashier.
