Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #92139 - Fractional Currency - ($ 275.00 - $ 525.00)
Fr. 1232 5c Second Issue
This Second Issue Fractional is a real enigma. Everything about this note screams out "Superb Gem 67 PPQ" but the holder says UNC 62. The sheet margins are enormous on all four sides, the bronze oval is perfectly centered, the back design is wonderfully centered, and the note is as bright and fresh as if it were printed last week.
Grade: PCGS Banknote UNC 62
Lot #92140 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
Fr. 1233 5c Second Issue Inverted Surcharge Error
Milton 2R5.2f. The back design is correct but the "18-63" surcharges are inverted. Not a rare invert in terms of raw numbers but there likely aren't any better than Choice CU grade.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63
Lot #92141 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1234 5c Second Issue
A sleeper Fractional variety with "S" and "18-63" surcharges. Really quite rare at the gem grade level and never with this degree of eye appeal. Wide margins, bright paper, and bold surcharges all attest to the grade. We last sold this ex: Guevrekian note in our 2000 Memphis sale.
Grade: PCGS Banknote Gem UNC 65 PPQ
Lot #92142 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1236spwm 5c Third Issue Front & Back Wide Margin Specimen Set
Wonderful Wide Margin Specimen set.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #92143 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1236 5c Third Issue
An exceptional example for only the 64PPQ grade level. It has wide enough margins, good centering, and great originality. A premium near-gem red back Clark note.
Grade: PCGS Banknote Ch. UNC 64 PPQ
Lot #92144 - Fractional Currency - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)

Excellent centering is noticed on this original green back Clark note.
Grade: PCGS Banknote Gem UNC 65 PPQ
Lot #92146 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1242-3spwmf & 1243spwmb 10c First Issue Front & Back Wide Margin Specimen Set
Lovely Wide Margin Specimen set.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #92147 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Fr. 1242 10c First Issue
There have only been a couple of superb gem examples of this number that have sold in the past year or two. The PMG 67 EPQ realized $930 and the PCGS 67PPQ brought a whopping $3,840. Neither of those notes looked anything like this evening's offering. A couple of extra points could have easily been tacked on to the third-party grade. There will be no buyer's remorse from the winning bidder.
Grade: Legacy Superb Gem New 67PPQ
Lot #92148 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1242 10c First Issue
While this is clearly not of the same caliber as the superb gem offered previously, it isn't that far off. Wide margins, bright paper, and superb color all attest to the validity of the third-party grade. A note from Bob Laub's collection that is indicative of the collector's eye which he possessed.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #92149 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1244spwm 10c Second Issue Front & Back Wide Margin Specimen Set
Beautiful Specimen set.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #92150 - Fractional Currency - ($ 60.00 - $ 150.00)
Fr. 1244 & 1245 10c Second Issue
Two piece lot of 10c notes. One grades XF with a cornertip fold, the other is CU but with a tight cut.
Grade: x
Lot #92151 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1247 10c Second Issue
A much tougher note at the higher grade levels. We just sold a PMG Choice CU 63 EPQ for $330 a couple of weeks ago. This note is a point better and should realize far more money.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #92152 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1249 10c Second Issue Experimental Back
Milton 2E10R.4c. But for the lack of the face engraving, this note is identical to a Fr. 1249 Regular Issue Fiber Paper Ten Cent note. About a half dozen examples are known of this extremely popular unpunched, unstencilled Experimental note. Milt Friedberg's identical example realized $825 in 1997. Tom O'Mara's did about the same in 2005. This piece originally garnered more than $800 in a 2014 sale. We believe it to be an incredibly scarce and underrated Experimental. The comment of "as made green ink" on the back label is the pressbed smearing along the bottom edge on the bronze oval side.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #92153 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
Fr. 1249 10c Second Issue Experimental Back
Milton 2E10R.4. Two half-moon cancels with purple "SPECIMEN" diagonally across the center. Green back design. Surcharges T-1-18-63. Printed on fiber paper. This is an experimental of the Fr. 1249 fiber paper back. Not scarce but always coveted due to the beauty of its bright green inks.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #92154 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1249 10c Second Issue
A well margined example for the Choice New grade that has crystal clear surcharges and original paper when viewed from the back. Any uncirculated fiber paper note should be cherished but one as choice as this should be treasured.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63
Lot #92155 - Fractional Currency - ($ 275.00 - $ 525.00)
Fr. 1249 10c Second Issue
A lightly circulated fiber paper note with wide margins on all sides and excellent bronze oval centering.

Grade: RCGS Gem CU 65
Lot #92160 - Fractional Currency - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
Fr. 1251 10c Third Issue
A bright and attractive red back Washington note with three wide margins and an average fourth. That is all that limits this beauty from the gem grade.
Grade: Ch. CU
Lot #92161 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1253 10c Third Issue
A fine looking example of this Colby-Spinner autographed type. This is only a single point from being Top Pop at PMG. A real pleaser with similar grade pieces selling for around $1,000 each in the past year.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #92162 - Fractional Currency - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
Fr. 1253 10c Third Issue Courtesy Autograph
A handsome red back Fractional with Colby and Spinner autographs. It has really good margins, bold printing, and vibrant ink colors. Daniel Morgan has added his courtesy autograph vertically near the right border. An impressive piece.

Lot #92163 - Fractional Currency - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1254 10c Third Issue
A very pretty example of this much more challenging Jeffries-Spinner autographed note. The margins are more-than-acceptable at the Choice CU grade level, and the back color displays a fiery red hue. Plate number 17 is seen in the back lower left corner.
Grade: Ch. CU

A fairly run-of-the-mill green back Fractional whose status is augmented by a horizontally placed courtesy autograph of "Lee McClung / Treasurer of the U.S."
Grade: PCGS Banknote Abt. UNC 55 PPQ

Grade: RCGS Ch. CU 63
Lot #92172 - Fractional Currency - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
Fr. 1279 25c First Issue
Wonderful margins and bright yellow paper are seen on this desirable perforated Fractional. Some light glue is seen on the back and limits the grade.
Grade: UNC
Lot #92173 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1281 25c First Issue
An impressive First Issue type note that has superb paper color, ample margins, and deep embossing. PCGS Banknote cites the Attached Selvage at Top, a fact that only enhances the visual impact and value of this piece. The Bob Laub note graded PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ and topped the $400 mark. This note is better in so many ways.
Grade: PCGS Banknote Gem UNC 65 PPQ
Lot #92174 - Fractional Currency - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
Fr. 1281 25c First Issue Courtesy Autograph
A very pretty First Issue note that has some of the richest yellow and brown ink colors we can recall seeing for this type. Only a smaller right margin limits the grade to Choice CU. At lower left is the courtesy autograph of J.N. Huston / Treas US 1889-1891. An exciting note for the aspiring fractional currency generalist or courtesy autograph specialist.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63 EPQ

Fr. 1283 25c Second Issue Fiber Paper Experimental
Milton 2E25F.3i. Seen with the two typical half-moon cancels and purple "SPECIMEN" diagonally across the center. PCGS notes Minor Stains and they are indeed minor. This is very common printed on normal paper but is actually rare when printed on fiber paper. This first sold for over $400 in a January 2003 sale.
Grade: PCGS Ch. AU 58
Lot #92181 - Fractional Currency - ($ 350.00 - $ 650.00)

Lot #92187 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1299 25c Third Issue
A much scarcer fiber paper Fessenden note with solid surcharges. The note has toned some and is a little brittle, thereby causing the missing corner tip and edge tears that you see. There are only a couple of handled corners thus accounting for the grade.
Grade: AU
Lot #92188 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)

Grade: PCGS Banknote UNC 62
Lot #92197 - Fractional Currency - ($ 700.00 - $ 1,400.00)
Fr. 1314 50c Second Issue Experimental
Milton 2E50F.4i. From the very rare class of Experimentals that are not stamped 'Specimen' or punch canceled. It's printed from the completed Second Issue Fifty Cent face plate on a fine, soft, yellowed bond paper. Although this note does not have a watermark, Milt Friedberg conjectured that it is on the same paper that contains the 'Olier' watermark in several places on the sheet. Describing this note as rare is an understatement.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 50
Lot #92198 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1317 50c Second Issue Inverted Back
Milton 2R50.3e. Inverted back design. A rare invert with only a couple of pieces known. This evenly circulated piece carries provenances of the likes of Friedberg, O'Mara, Tabacco. Martin even fished this out of an early 1970s Stacks sale and sold it to Milt. It realized $550 in Milt's 1997 sale and $660 in O'Mara's 2005 sale. A great piece.

The Richmond district is easily the scarcest of the few printed for this enigmatic early FRN "C" series. Evenly circulated with three wide margins, bold lime-green inks, and no problems to mention. With the exception of the single example sold from the Taylor collection in 2005, all of the known pieces to appear at auction are decent Very Fines or lower end Extremely Fines. A great note.

This Jefferson County bank opened in 1930 and closed up in 1930. There are plenty of notes listed in the census but this bright and colorful XF is one of the few nicest ones. Wonderful stamped signatures of Cashier Daly and Vice President Crawford. Notes with "VICE" added are anything but common.

The Central NB opened its doors in 1913 and they were closed in 1930. This goes a long way to explain why large size notes are more common than the dozen small size enumerated in the census. Type One Tens and Twenties only during the small size era. A bright and very well embossed piece that is one of the couple nicest known.

Eutaw, First NB, 3931
About 30 small size notes are listed in the NBN census for this challenging Greene County institution. All notes are of the $10 denomination during the small size era. The bank initially opened in 1888 and survived a healthy life until closing up shop during the throes of the Great Depression in 1933. An evenly circulated example that has good margins and plenty of body to the paper. This represents the lowest serial number known for this bank.

Phoenix, NB of Arizona, P3728
This fabled Maricopa County institution opened in 1887 and survived to the end of the National Banking era. A single stamped signature remains on this bright and colorful note. Three wide margins are seen at the expense of a tight fourth. According to the NBN census, this evening's offering is certainly one of the couple-nicest known of 27 pieces listed. This note is vastly superior to the "State Collection" example that we just sold for $1,200. After selling for $3,680 in Heritage's January 2001 sale, this note could easily reach those heights once again tonight.

From our PCDA 2015 sale, lot 1016, where it was described as: "I had this note graded because I thought it was UNC, not 58 PPQ. It has great color, lovely stamped signatures and beautiful paper quality. Bids on this note could easily surpass my expectations. One of 61 large notes reported. From the Rocky Mountain Collection. ---- Denver was founded in November 1858 as a mining town during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush in western Kansas Territory. The rush began in July 1858 and lasted until roughly the creation of the Colorado Territory on February 28, 1861. An estimated 100,000 gold seekers took part in one of the greatest gold rushes in North American history. Denver was a frontier town, with an economy based on servicing local miners with gambling, saloons, livestock and goods trading." It realized $1,527.50 at that time.

Delaware City, NB, 1332
A longstanding New Castle County bank which opened in 1885 and survived through the end of the National Banking era. A check of the NBN census shows that there are 21 small size notes known, all of which essentially grade Fine or Very Fine. This is a bright and very well centered example that is sure to please. Originally from a Stacks Bowers 2015 sale at close to $650. One of a quartet of Type Two Tens.

Fr. 657 $20 1902ND
Ocala, Munroe & Chambliss NB, S10578
A challenging Marion County institution that opened in 1914 and lasted through to 1935. A very scarce bank with a baker's dozen known. There are very few private name banks known in the state of Florida, with this example having a "Minor Repair" spotted near the top left margin. The signatures have faded to the point that we are not blessed with President J.J. Munroe's autograph. This scarce note first sold for $1,725 a decade ago.

Grade: PMG VF 20    Bank Name: Ocala, Munroe & Chambliss NB, 10578
Lot #92479 - National Bank Notes > Georgia - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Fr. 1801-2 $10 1929T2
Gainesville, First NB, 3894
This northern Georgia note opened its doors in 1889 and survived through the end of the small size note-issuing era. The census for this bank is a bit misleading. There are roughly 30 notes known but 80 per cent of those are tied up in uncut sheets. The paper wave, embossing, and color are superb. Light circulation is barely discernible through the new PCGS Banknote holder.
Grade: PCGS Banknote XF 40 PPQ    Bank Name: Gainesville, First NB, 3894

Raymond, First NB, 6910
A plain rare example from this Montgomery County bank which opened in 1903 and survived until 1935. A pithy half-dozen large size notes are left extant and it bears an always popular first name for any collector's set. It is well circulated with some edge roughness, but the body and overall integrity of this piece remains intact. Our estimate should prove conservative once the hammer falls this evening.

Triumph, First NB, M7660
A great town name for this La Salle County bank which opened in 1905 and continued to print notes through to 1935. During the large size era only Third Charters were printed. A mere dozen large size notes are known, with a very "Minor Foreign Substance" being noted by PCGS Banknote. Wide margins, great color and a modicum of light folds lend greatly to the eye appeal of this note. Only one lucky bidder will be able to have this note make a "triumphant" entry into his collection.

Seneca, First NB, W2952
This is the seventh large note reported on this tough bank in northern Kansas, and only three have even been offered publicly, one in 2001 and now this Brown Back. In 2005 a VF 25 realized $1,150. The left end of this note had some border design loss and it could be restored. Few would even care as this note is just that rare. Signed by G.W. Williamson, President and J.H. Cohen, Cashier. This jewel is not a Gem but definitely a jewel. PCGS notes: edge repairs, design redrawn.

Louisville, NB & Trust Co., 5161
This Louisville bank opened in 1898 and exited the banking scene in 1929 before having the opportunity to issue small size notes. This third title was adopted in 1927 by adding the "and Trust Company" nomenclature. This note is seen with deeply printed devices, bright paper surfaces, and a modicum of light folds, thereby connoting a state of preservation better than our assigned grade. If you are merely looking for a picture perfect $50 type note, I assure the winning bidder that you will not be disappointed.

Fr. 512 $50 1882BB
New Orleans, State NB, 1774
This New Orleans $50 Brown Back is a great choice to represent Louisiana in the "State Collection" or the $50 Brown Back as a type. I expected a VF 20 but they disagreed. Records show the last offered sold for $20,000 in 2014 at Heritage Auctions. There are only 17 large notes reported - and this is not included on the list. Excellent pen signatures and conservatively graded for some reason.

Baltimore, NB, 1432
This Baltimore city bank helped launch the inaugural national banking system in 1865 and lived a healthy long life until going out in 1930. Even novice collectors of Nationals probably know that Third Charter notes on this bank are dirt common. With that said, Red Seals are an entirely different matter. This note is one of two Red Seals listed. It is bright, has lipstick red inks, and displays even centering. We first sold this same note in our Spring 2000 sale for $1,650.

Fr. 632 $10 1902ND
St. Paul, National Exchange Bank, 10940
This note was lot 329 in the Melamed Collection sale where it was described as: This was a short-lived bank, between 1917 and 1926, and it has 16 recorded serial numbers today. The note is a beauty with the printed signatures and no line below like real signatures. High quality notes rarely appear, even with 16 reported. This one is about as high a quality as have survived. Signed by Ola Patterson, President and C.S. Dilther, Cashier." It realized $575 in 2010 at that sale.

Vicksburg, Citizens NB, 7507
This Warren County bank opened in 1904 and stopped printing money in 1929. Large notes only with eighteen survivors known. With the exception of a couple of Very Fines, a decent Fine is more than satisfying from this charter.

Fr. 606 $5 1902ND
Kansas City, Continental NB of Jackson Co., M11377
A very short-lived Jackson County institution that only served the people of Kansas City from 1919 to 1923. Not surprisingly there are only a half-dozen pieces known. The PCGS grade is a little perplexing for this well signed and well detailed note. It looks like a solid VG/Fine with just a couple of internal holes.
Grade: PCGS Good 6    Bank Name: Kansas City, Continental NB of Jackson Co., M11377
Lot #92523 - National Bank Notes > Missouri - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)

King City, First NB, M4373
This Gentry County bank opened to the public in 1890 and ultimately liquidated its assets in 1924. A healthy majority of auction appearances from this bank are $5 and $10 Brown Backs. A high-grade Third Charter note is to be cherished since appearances are few. Lovely pen signatures, vibrant blue inks, and more-than-acceptable margins to qualify for the Choice CU grade. A pristine piece that should not have any troubles achieving a four-figure realization.

Fr. 633 $10 1902ND
Point Pleasant Beach, Ocean County NB, E5712
This has always been one of the greatest names and I'm sure the demand and price will reflect that. The note has excellent signatures that are perfectly clear. This note was the last one of its quality offered and that was in 2001; two low grade Blue Seals and a Fine $20 Value Back which brought $8,596 in 2007. There was a heavy fold that has been restored to protect any possibility of splitting. There are only 14 large notes recorded on this Ocean County bank, right on the water. A beautiful spot for fishermen up and down the East Coast.
Grade: VF +    Bank Name: Point Pleasant Beach, Ocean County NB, E5712

Hudson Falls, NB, 8297
A really scarce Washington County bank that opened in 1906 and which closed during the throes of the Great Depression in 1931. Sandy Hill was the original name of this upstate New York community that changed its name to Hudson Falls in 1910. This offering is one of just six 1929 Series examples in the census and is easily the finest known of that half dozen. Displaying bright, white paper and original surfaces, it has acquired only a few light folds.

Fr. 454 $100 Original
New York, NB of Commerce, 733
This is one of only two known $100 Original Series & 1875 Series with this first, earlier title. Dated Jan. 22, 1865. This note last appeared in a 1988 Stack's sale (10/18/88) Lot #389. Today this evenly circulated $100 is PMG graded VF 20 (PMG notes: Pinholes). $100 First Charters are seldom seen and only available from a small number of states. Census numbers for $100 Original Series remain quite low and series of 1875 are only slightly more often available in spite of the life of the 1875 issue.

New York, Bronx NB, 8926
A very popular New York City bank which opened its doors in 1907 and merged out of existence in 1928, becoming part of the Chase Manhattan banking empire. It operated on East 149th street, just a few blocks from the eventual location of Yankee Stadium, which itself opened in 1923. The Bronx National was the first of only four National Banks to operate in the city's only mainland borough. There are obviously recent auction results from this charter with the dispersal of Carmine's collection. Another sheet mate of this note, at the same PMG Choice UNC 63 EPQ grade level, sold a few weeks ago for $1,260.

This Northampton County bank operated from 1872 to 1932. The bank itself is anything but scarce, but as a type Brown Backs are just plain rare. Although the president's signature has mostly faded, the cashier's vanity signature more than makes up for it. The only other Brown Back that we know of is a $20 note, graded PCGS VF 35, that sold for $1,610 back in 2007.

This Lycoming County institution opened in 1907 and survived to 1935 when the National Banking era came to a halt. A dozen-and-a-half small size notes are listed in the NBN census. Even though there is a repaired edge tear in the left margin, the note retains its original crispness and embossing and has a trio of huge margins.

North East, NB, 9149
This thriving Erie County institution opened its doors in 1908 and survived through the end of the small size era. A baker's dozen are enumerated in the NBN census with this and its consecutive serial number note the only ones even remotely close to an Uncirculated grade. Seen with mountainous embossing and natural paper wave. A stunning piece.

Union City, NB, 14093
Sometimes we see the term "late chartering bank" bandied about, but in this instance it is absolutely true. This Erie County institution did not open until 1934 and of course the issuing period ended in 1935. A superbly embossed example that seems to be tied for finest known from this bank. Long before the advent of third-party grading extirpated and vitiated this hobby that we all love, this note sold in our February 1996 sale with the simple grade of "Uncirculated."

A large only Brookings County bank that opened in 1902 and closed its doors in 1926. A mere half-dozen pieces are enumerated in the census with only the two Red Seals garnering any grade. Of the few Plain Backs this may very well be the nicest one. Coincidentally, our consignor of this note also owned the #1 Red Seal a few years ago, if only for a brief moment in time. This evenly circulated example has good color and a trio of gigantic margins.

A lovely but slightly flat VF + that is problem free. There are only nine large notes reported and the last Value Back offered was 17 years ago. There are only three $10 Value Backs recorded. The stamped signature of the cashier is a bit light but the ink signature of the president is very clear.

Rutland, County NB, 820
This eponymous Rutland County bank spanned the entirety of the National Banking era, with the great mystery remaining how there are only a dozen large and a dozen small size notes known after 70 years of operations. This is listed as Extremely Fine in the NBN census and it's easy to see why. The embossing is razor sharp and the paper is crackling fresh. A bright and widely margined beauty worthy of consideration.

Abingdon, First NB, 5150
A challenging Washington County bank which opened in 1898 and survived through the end of the small size note-issuing era. With roughly 20 small size known this is one of those interesting banks that is significantly scarcer in small size than large size. A charming town in southwestern Virginia which is right near the borders of both North Carolina and tri-cities region of eastern Tennessee. The $5 denomination was the only one utilized by the bank during its existence. While there are a handful of higher grade Second Charter large size notes known, such is not the case for their small size brethren. The ratio of Type Ones to Type Twos is about four to one. This evening's offering is easily the finest small size note on the bank. Fold counters might view this as a VF 35, but seasoned market participants will know this as Extremely Fine every day of the week and twice on Sundays. A crackling fresh piece with cavernous embossing, radiant inks, deeply printed devices, and good centering. If you are the type of collector who is always in search of the best and who appreciates paper money that is the embodiment of beauty and aesthetics, then you needn't look any further.

Gate City, First & Peoples NB, 13502
A late chartering Scott County bank that did not open until 1930 and survived until the 1935 end of the era. A rare note with eight small size known, only a couple of which are Type Twos. So far as we can tell this is the first Type Two to appear at auction. Although seen with the soiling that one might expect for a Fine note, the paper has good body and the bank's second title. Rare.

A better Winchester note that opened in 1902. Only two dozen small size notes listed, all of which utilized this second bank title. Quite dirty and with smooth surfaces. Auction appearances of this charter are few and far between.

Wytheville, First NB, 9012
This Wythe County bank, located in the southwestern part of the state, opened in 1908 and survived the issuing period to 1935. It is bright, colorful, and deeply printed. Most of the notes that reach auction seem to be $20 denomination, and the few $10 notes have been Type Twos. We recently saw one other $10 graded PMG AU 53 with a tear, sell for $576. A truly lovely piece that is as nice as any we have seen.
