Operation Fortitude was the name of a World War II military deception to confuse the Germans as to where the Americans would land; Calais was Operation Fortitude South. The first I have ever seen.

Different views of Ermita del Cerrito del Carmen on face and Paisaje de Chichicastenango on back than that used for the issued type. Roman numeral at bottom left and right. No mention of Quetzal on this piece. Date stamp including March 13, 1947 and other official notations on otherwise blank side. Speculation is that American Bank Note Company was uncertain about what type to use for this denomination. Eventually a later date of the previous type was utilized, followed closely by a completely new design. Wonderful transition piece of critical importance for the Latin American collector.
