CT-21/22 $1/2-$2/3 February 17, 1776 Block of Six Notes
Any larger multiple of these Fugio fractional denominations is rare. PCGS notes Restorations, design redrawn. Really not bad at all in terms of eye appeal. Each note with face and back motifs created by Ben Franklin. The face shows the sundial with "MIND YOUR BUSINESS" motto. The back has 13 interlocked chain links with the names of the original colonies. The surrounds the motto "We are One." This block first sold in 2015 for over $2,000 and it would not surprise us at all to see a similar realization this evening.

A very lightly circulated Fugio fractional Continental note. Signed by Taylor. Although not wide the margins are complete on all sides. The Newman notes in nice AU grade tended to sell between $2,000-$4,000 each.

CC-22 $2/3 February 17, 1776 Benjamin Levy Autograph
PMG comments rust, repaired. We see no evidence of either. Signed by Benjamin Levy. Levy is the only confirmed Jewish signer of Continental Currency and notes with his signature have been collected avidly by both Jew and Gentile alike. The host note by itself is worth several hundred dollars. What makes this note so special is that Levy's signature is incredibly rare on Fugio fractional Continentals. We have done a lot of research and asked some of the specialists and they have only seen maybe one other in a combined many decades of experience. The serial number and Levy signature are both bold red. An absolutely wonderful hidden rarity, the likes of which can only be found in the arenas of Colonial and Continental Currency. A once in a lifetime opportunity.

This two-color printing technique was only used on this final Continental emission. While plenty available up through and including the AU grade, CU notes are not easy to find for this denomination. PMG notes previously mounted but there is little visual impact to that effect.

United States Lottery Uncut Sheet of Three
November 18, 1776. Signed by Campbell. No serial numbers. Class the Third. Intricate border design at left. Passed in Philadelphia by the Continental Congress. The lottery system was a way to raise funds that was not as objectionable as levying taxes. This lottery did not last since the payout was lower than other lotteries that operated at that time. Some staining is seen as well as edge splits at left. A vastly underappreciated genre within the aegis of colonial fiscal items.

Treasury Office Transfer Certificates 1789
Two Examples. Anderson CT-27. The first certificate is dated July 9, 1789 and made out for 2107 Pounds 1 Pence. The second certificate is dated August 7, 1789 and made out for 19 Pounds 1 Shilling 9 Pence. Both are signed by Jed(ediah) Huntington as treasurer. He was active in the Sons of Liberty and then served as a general during the Revolutionary War. He was one of the organizers of the Society of the Cincinnati. In 1789 he became Treasurer for the State of Connecticut until President Washington appointed him to be the customs house collector for the coastal area from the Connecticut River to Rhode Island. He served in this capacity until his death in 1818. A great pair and a breath of fresh air compared to the plethora of common Connecticut fiscal paper that collectors are forced to endure at auction.

A seldom-encountered series printed by Benjamin Franklin and David Hall. Nature print seen on back. Two-color printing is utilized which makes this a very popular note. It is also the highest denomination from this series. PCGS notes splits, tape repaired at center, stains. The Newman note graded PCGS VF 20 Apparent and sold for over $1,400.

Unlisted in Anderson. Savannah, Georgia. December 28, 1755. 200 Pounds. The top margin shows a trio of 6 Pence impressed revenue stamps. Larger impressed seal at document's end. Blank page shows regal watermark with crown at top and Latin wording. Some edge and internal splits do little to hinder the integrity of this piece. Any First of Exchange is a very desirable item. While not nearly as desirable as the Continental Loan Office First Bills of Exchange, this is still a great historical item from early in Georgia's Colonial history.

Sterling issue. Signed by Gibbons and O'Bryen. Notes from this southern colony are always considered desirable and this one is no exception. Any AU note is to be treasured since there are only a couple of later issues from which CU pieces are obtainable. This same note sold for over $1,600 a decade ago. We would not be surprised to see a repeat performance here this evening.

Five bold signatures. Deep blue rattlesnake vignette surrounded by Latin motto NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSET, which Newman translates as, "No one will provoke me with impunity." PCGS notes damaged, pieces replaced, design redrawn. Newman had a PCGS VF 35 PPQ that sold for over $3,000. This note won't get there but the technical assessment is very similar.

Colonial Fiscal Document Feb. 3, 1785
Feb. 3, 1785. A couple of fold tears. Signed by Nathaniel Pendleton. Addressed to Seth John Cuthbert. Pendleton served in the Continental Army. He was Attorney General in Georgia from 1785-86. He was a "second" to Hamilton in his duel with Aaron Burr. Seth John Cuthbert fought in the American Revolution. Afterward he was Georgia State Treasurer from 1784-86 and also served on the Council of Safety.

Georgia Land Grant Signed by Thomas Mifflin and James Wilson
This oversized document was a deed for 49,000 acres of land in Montgomery County. Dated August 17, 1795. Light edge staining. Some internal juncture holes due to the oversized nature of the document. Mentioned in the first lines of this document is Abraham Dubois, who was a silversmith in Philadelphia. Sealed and Delivered in the presence of Matthew Irwin and William Wilson. These were both notable figures during the colonies' struggle for independence. Wilson was a signer of Continental Currency. Also signed by James Trimble, as the first Deputy Secretary of Pennsylvania. Signed by Thomas Mifflin. He served in a number of important roles during and after the American Revolution. He served in the Continental Congress and as aide-de-camp to General Washington. Most importantly, he was a member of the Constitutional Convention and signed that monumental document. Of greatest historical significance to this large document is the signature of James Wilson (swooping W and all). He was a signer of Continental Currency and his signature on Continentals increases their value by several multiples. That is because he was a signer of the Declaration of Independence as well as the Constitution of the United States. At the convention, he and Roger Sherman of Rhode Island were responsible for creating the Three-Fifths compromise. He was also one of the original Justices of the United States Supreme Court. If you are so much as a passing student of our fledgling nation's history, out of necessity you must view this deed of land with supreme intrigue.

Legal Petition for a Writ of Attachment Signed by George Walton
Feb. 23, 1785. Signed twice by Nathaniel Pendleton. Also signed by Seth John Cuthbert. Fold tears and stains. Seal at upper left. Below that is the signature of George Walton in his capacity as Justice of the Peace. Walton is best known as a signer of the Declaration of Independence. His is quite a rare signature on currency and the notes tend to sell in the thousands of dollars when they do appear with his autograph. Walton had a expansive political history as he served twice as the Governor of Georgia, as Chief Justice of Georgia, and finally as a United States senator. It may be a long time before another document with George Walton's autograph appears.

A stunning multiple that is as fine as any we have seen (which includes the Boyd example). Each of the four notes in this vertical strip are superbly printed, wonderfully signed, and as crisp and fresh as the day they were made. As individual AU notes these would cumulatively be worth around $1,200. As a handsome multiple such as this, the price of poker goes way up.

MD-115 $1 June 28, 1780
Radar serial #5665. Guaranteed by the United States issue and countersigned on the back. The 1780 Continental Congress resolution authorized the states to redeem Continental Currency and created these federally-backed notes. The $1 guaranteed issue notes from the different colonies seem to be a lot scarcer than the higher denomination notes. The Newman note graded 64PPQ and sold for over $1,400. This same note sold for $1,880 in the 2014 Central States sale. This lovely Ch. CU piece should have no problems scaling the thousand-dollar barrier.

Principio Company First Bill of Exchange 35 Pounds
Serial #7. August 24, 1768. Signed by Thomas Russell. Some internal and edge splits. "At Sixty Days Sight of this my first Bill of Exchange....." By the early 18th century England had depleted its iron ore supply due to hundreds of years of mining. Maryland was found to have lots of iron ore, particularly near Principio Creek, and half of the iron shipped to England between 1718-1755 came from here. Most pre-Revolutionary fiscal documents are scarce. This First Bill of Exchange is the only one we have seen and it is presumed to be quite rare.

Signed by Cranch. An advanced state of preservation is seen on this Codfish note which gives the appearance of a better grade. Bold pine tree vignette on back. The face plate was designed by Paul Revere and the back by Thomas Fleet. The Newman note graded PCGS Ch. New 63 and sold for close to $1,300. An excellent prize for any registry set type set.

Cape Elizabeth Tax Assessment 432 Pounds
March 10, 1777. Wax seal at left. Entirely handwritten. "Agreeable to your Warrant dated Feby 7, 1777." An interesting tax assessment signed by Ebenezer Sawyer, Patrick Maxwell, and David Strout. Also addressed to "The Honorable Henry Gardner Esq. Treasurer of the State of the Massachusetts Bay in Boston." Cape Elizabeth was originally located in Colonial Massachusetts before Maine became a state in 1820. A cool historical item.

Unlisted in Anderson. Dated at Sandisfield the 25th of September 1777. Entirely handwritten. Red wax seal on verso. A couple of small edge splits. Addressed to Mr. Henry Gardner. The letter makes reference to the constable, Mr. Elijah Deming. Signed by Assessors Benjamin Clark Johan Stillman, and Nathan Spelman. Mr. Gardner was the Province Treasurer.

State of Massachusetts-Bay Treasury Loan Certificate 16 Pounds 14 Shillings
Anderson MA-10. December 1, 1777. Sword-in-Hand vignette surrounded by rattlesnake. Signed by Henry Gardner as treasurer. His signature was pen cancelled as always. Also signed by committee members I. Scollay, Eze. Price, and P(eter) Boyer. Design engraved by Nathaniel Hurd. These Treasury Loan Certificates paid at 6% per Annum. They were authorized on October 13, 1777 and were due on March 1, 1781. Some minor foxing spots, mostly on the back. A couple of paltry edge splits. An excellent Colonial fiscal item and one of the prettiest we have seen of this type.

Mendes I. Cohen obtained many original plates from New England colonies and made reprints ca. 1850s. For this reason there are neither signatures nor serial numbers. Lightly handled. Many reprints are not particularly collectible but such is not the case with Cohen reprints. Intact sheets do not appear very often but we have a nice group in this evening's sale.

Blodget Canal Company February 1, 1799 One Share
February 1, 1799. Seal at left. Numbered and dated. Signed by Sam Blodget as President. Attested by Samuel Kidder as Clerk. This fiscal instrument pertains to the Blodget Canal Company, at Amoskeig Falls, in New-Hampshire. Samuel Kidder was born in Chelmsford, Mass. and went to East Alstead, New Hampshire in 1772. He died in 1824. Samuel Blodget founded the city of Manchester, New Hampshire. In 1807, Blodgett built a canal around Amoskeag Falls to aid in navigation of ships traveling up and down the Merrimack River. A couple small edge and internal splits are of little consequence. A pristine example of an important item.

Cohen Reprints Different Issues
Sixteen piece lot. There is a wide variety of New Hampshire issues found in this lot. These were all printed by Mendes I. Cohen. He was able to procure the original plates from a number of New England early colonial issues and make reprints circa 1850s. There are therefore no signatures or serial numbers. There is the occasional straggler in VF but a healthy majority of these grade either AU or CU. There is a lot of value here for the prospective colonial currency collector or dealer who knows how to market these.

NJ-112 3 Pounds November 20, 1757
A pretty darn scarce high denomination note from an infrequently seen 1757 issue. The signatures are quite bold, the red inks stand out, and the margins are acceptable for this type. Almost all pieces that we see come up for sale are VG or Fine and have splits, tears, stains, and the like. This problem free VF is likely one of the nicest you will ever find. There were only 917 printed for this issue and denomination and this is certainly one of the nicest you will find, especially when one considers that almost all of these early New Jersey notes are found in Net or Apparent holders. This same note first sold for over $750 in the 2013 Central States sale.

Three well-accomplished signatures remain, the margins are well above average, and the printing detail is excellent. You are not likely to find a better one. Your cataloger is of the correct opinion that these early New Jersey notes are unbelievably underappreciated and typically sell for a fraction of the cost that is warranted.

A better later New Jersey issue that is a much greater challenge to locate than the common 1763 and 1776 high-grade notes. But for a center fold they rarely are seen nicer than this. The margins on this issue are notoriously tight but such is not the case here. The originality is clearly evident through the holder. The Newman note was a rather unsightly PCGS Apparent XF 40 and it still sold for $375.

Worthy of whatever it takes to obtain it.

At the XF grade level, this is one of the prettiest examples we have seen in years.

NY-290 Bank of New York Checks $300 and $3000 1796-1797
Unlisted in Anderson. Stunning and rare checks on the Bank of New York. The first is for $300 and dated Aug. 8, 1797 with the second for $3,000 and dated Sept. 1, 1796. Both are cross-cut cancelled and pen cancelled. Although made out to two different people, both are signed by Archibald Gracie. Gracie was a shipping magnate and merchant in New York and Virginia. The eponymous Gracie Mansion houses the Mayor of New York City. The only comparable example that we have been able to find in recent years was signed by Robert Morris. That piece was only VF with hinge repairs and tears and it still saw a realization over $700. This rare and seemingly unique pair should garner a lot of attention from the colonial fiscal collectors who have come to the forefront in recent years.

Harris H17. Found on page 305 in Newman. Problem free and one of the couple nicest we have ever seen. Printed by Hugh Gaine. Engraved signature of D. Phoenix, City Treasurer. Newman cites that these were produced "to satisfy the want of small change." Most are well worn and usually have problems. These were in use for almost ten years until they were recalled on June 1, 1799. A prize piece for either the Colonial paper money collector or early Obsolete note collector. The Newman 3 Pence note was an Apparent VF 20 and sold for just under $200. Exceptional grade and rare at this level.

PMG notes backed, repairs of splits, internal tears, & corners. There are two varieties and this is the one that has payment Hyphenated. I would imagine PMG would re-holder this with the correct spelling for Hyphenated (sic). In any event, this same note first appeared as part of the Thomas Gray collection last year with an estimate of $5,000-up. That sounds high to me but we would like it to sell.

Top Pop at both services. This is easily the nicest example we have ever seen from this early North Carolina series. Nice AU examples show up here and there but an accurately graded Ch. CU piece is a true condition rarity. There are three gigantic margins, four bold signatures, nearly full border ornamentation, and printing that looks as if it were applied last night. This same note first sold in 2011 for $1,265 and we would be shocked if it did not repeat that performance.

A truly magnificent North Carolina note that is simply never seen at this grade level.

Three signatures remain with the bold black serial number and signature of Charles Thomson standing out. Thomson was an Irish-born patriot who lived in Philadelphia and who was the secretary of the Continental Congress throughout its existence. Before the sales of the Newman collection in recent years, this would easily have been worth a few thousand dollars in this state of preservation.

Signed at lower left by John Lukens, Esq. as Surveyor General. He served in that capacity in Delaware from 1761-1776 and in Pennsylvania from 1781-1789. Signed at lower right by John Armstrong, who had a storied career in Pennsylvania Colonial history. Also signed at lower right by the Honorable James Ewing Esq. as Vice President of the supreme executive council. Ewing was a very important person during the Revolutionary period and afterwards. If you are a student of Colonial history then this land grant is for you.

Signed by John Lukens, Esq., Surveyor General. Also signed by James Potter, Esq., Deputy Surveyor. Lukens was the Surveyor General of both Delaware (1761-1776) and Pennsylvania (1781-1789). James Potter was a soldier, land developer, and politician. George Latimer was also an important player in colonial Pennsylvania politics. In 1791 he was elected as a director of the Bank of the United States. He was also President of the Union Fire Insurance Company. A superb fiscal item.

This same note has easily scaled the $2,000 mark the first couple of times that it sold over a decade ago. A great piece.

He was also the Clerk of the Assembly for roughly four decades. He served a single term as Governor of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. A simple yet early colonial document.

June 8, 1758. Entirely handwritten document. "Payable to Nathan Rice, Esq. Fifty pounds Lawful Money it being to enable him to pay wages to the troops, and charge the same to the Colony." Four Committee of War signatures at bottom. One of those signers, Thomas Cranston, was a justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court, as well as a Speaker of the Rhode Island House of Representatives. Since this is dated 1758 one would assume that this troop payment was somehow related to the French and Indian War, since the colony did supply troops for that war effort.

SC-139 $5-$6-$8-$1 (2) Complete Sheet December 23, 1776
Uncut double-pane sheet. Wakefield single signature remainders. Printed on heavy, coarse paper by Peter Timothy. There are so many adjectives and phrases used to describe rarity in our hobby but "Rare as hen's teeth" certainly seems like an appropriate application to describe this complete sheet. The two that we have seen in recent decades have provenances such as Boyd and Newman. In the past this sheet has received a couple of different grades due to the fact that there is some light handling as well as a vertical fold that is entirely between the two panes of notes. Different people grade something like that differently but we are just going to call it AU/CU. The individual notes could be cut up and sold for several hundred dollars each. The whole is worth more than the sum of its parts. This originally sold in Ford Part VI for the princely sum of $5,175. It would not be a stretch in today's market.

A very bright example with superior ship vignette and bright paper. This note is from the second series of James River bank forms. Unused forms from the 1773 issue were used which is why the format of the second issue is the same. Newman sold an example of this denomination, in a rather average looking PCGS Apparent VF 25 holder, which realized about $450.

Treasury Department Manuscript Import Duties
Nov. 11, 1797. Signed by Oliver Wolcott and Benjamin Lincoln, Esq. Wolcott, Jr. graduated from Yale at the age of 18 and then from law school at the age of 21. He succeeded Alexander Hamilton as the second Treasurer of the United States. Benjamin Lincoln was the first Collector of the Port of Boston, which is the capacity in which he has signed this document. He served heroically in the Revolutionary War. From 1788-89 he was the Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts. From 1781-83 he was the Continental States Secretary of War. A fascinating piece of colonial era/early American fiscal history.

This note should fall in the middle somewhere. In January a VF 25 realized $3,840 and records show 201 serial numbers recorded, with high grades very uncommon and UNCs are nearly impossible to acquire. Blue seal and the Parker-Burke Treasury signatures.

That being said, there are few notes that seriously fascinate me. This Double Denomination $50 face and $100 back is half of the sheet. The Columbia National Bank produced 8,494 sheets of 1882 sheets of one $50 and one $100 notes. This sheet has the back inverted creating a UNIQUE DOUBLE DENOMINATION ERROR. The quality is spectacular and the desirability is over the top. Certainly among the rarest and most exciting items I have had the pleasure of offering.

The King of the Error Notes. The $20 face with a $10 back were discovered shortly after the release of this series. After an extensive investigation the Government determined there were 160 pieces printed that way and that 40 had reached circulation. This information was the first that we actually knew how many were believed to exist. Error authority, Harry Jones of Cleveland, believes that number to be low, as he handled 12 pieces at the Houston ANA. The 1974 era double denomination has been a favorite among the small size and error collectors for years. The celebrated sale of Albert Grinnell highlighted the rarity and desirability of double denominations as compared to other bank notes at that time. As I recall, many of the $20/$10 double denomination notes were discovered in and around Houston, with Don Swanson and other Houston dealers searching high and low for more examples. I you follow paper money collecting, you will find that the double denomination notes have fascinated collectors and the public since anyone was paying attention.

Washington's tomb at Mount Vernon at upper left. All penned features are pristine and look as if they were applied last week. The $5 and $10 notes from this issue are much scarcer than are the lower denominations. The Newman note, consecutive to this one, had a 64 PPQ grade and is the only better example of which we are aware. That piece sold for close to $1,300 and it would not surprise us to see a similar realization this evening.

Not many were issued we believe and this is serial number 130. This example is superior to the Haxby Plate Note which sports the hefty pedigree of Allan Dorris (where it realized $2,350 in January 2015) and subsequently Art Davidson where it still brought $1,440 last September in our more realistic obsolete currency market of today. Well framed and balanced. An excellent opportunity to obtain an undervalued rarity and fascinating type.

Certainly still Rarity-7 as listed in the first Indiana book. There was only $43 left out by 1860 and notes were redeemed at 83 cents by the state which is not bad considering it failed in a year. The new Wendell Wolka Indiana E-Book is a must have, is extensively expanded and now renumbered. Normal wear for the grade; without faults.

Very few $100 Proofs are known on the entire state and this is the only example of this type that we have seen. It originally sold for over $3,500 as part of the Peter Mayer collection.

This ex: Peter Meyer note fell just short of the $1,000 mark in 2015. A great example.

A very scarce reprint sheet that was commissioned by the bank in the mid-19th century. Genuine examples are unknown in this form. The Massachusetts Bank is the second oldest in the United States, having been organized in 1784. Some hinge repaired tears are seen. Two punch-out cancels seen in the signature lines of each note. A great item and always desirable.

Cr. 9. Mar. 7, 1862. This is the first Criswell "Cotton Pledged" note and a real challenge to locate in better grade. A sidewheel steamer is seen at center. Freedom with sword at left. Very light staining and edge roughness at left does little to distract one from the rarity and grade wielded by this note. The Newman example had this same March 7, 1862 date. It graded PCGS Apparent VF 30 and sold for about $650. The paper on this note, while at the same grade level, is actually of a much higher quality.

Haxby MS-UNL. This late Post Note is not only an important denomination from the state, but an immense rarity. We do not recall seeing an example and it appears to be an unlisted type in all the references (notes from Yazoo City are listed). It’s a Rawdon, Wright & Hatch engraved note with Hebe and eagle at the top. Not in Byron Cook’s 1995 auction which set the standard for Mississippi note collections. The note was once lightly silked with back stains. Piece off bottom- academic in regards to its possible uniqueness. Estimate might be conservative depending on specialist’s inclinations.

This was once thought to be the first bank in the Territory but notes more recently researched showed dates of 1857, and this is dated January 1, 1858. Remember 1854 was the Kansas Nebraska Act. Signed by E.P. Goddard and A. Wilson. I believe these were listed as R-7 in Walton and they have remained that rare.

One of the few legitimate Nevada Obsoletes to choose from, aside from the common pieces that always appear at auction. One of only two CU examples that we have seen for all denominations from this issuer. This same note sold a year ago for over $2,000 and there is no reason why the same result will occur this time.

The American Exchange bank Proofs appear regularly enough and are still worth a few hundred dollars in respectable Ch. CU condition. The Atlantic bank Proofs are an entirely different matter. They rarely appear with the exception of a few Proof pairs such as this that came from the ABNCo sale. This is the finest example from that group and it should have no trouble escalating into four-figure price territory.

A couple of small edge splits with one of them having a small repair on the back. A truly wondrous note on a variety of fronts. The Newman example of this scarce denomination graded Fine, with some unmentioned minor issues, and it scaled the thousand dollar barrier.

Harris 10. December 15, 1815. Signed and issued. PMG notes previously mounted. A giant gutter fold error bisects the central denomination marker. Not a scarce issue but a really scarce and cool odd denomination. The only other one we have seen was the Harris collection note, which graded VF and sold for around $600 in 2003. This note, considering its grade and gutter fold error, should make a strong case for a four-figure price realization.

Sag Harbor is a village located in Suffolk County, Long Island, in the towns of East Hampton and Southampton. A charming location and one that should be visited by anyone with so much as a shred of civility. A great Long Island piece.

What makes this note so special is that it is numbered, dated, and signed by BOTH the Cashier and President. Remainders from this issue are dirt common. Fully issued notes are not. This lovely Ch. AU example is one of the very nicest fully issued ones we have seen.

OH-5 G112a. Wolka 0205-06. March 1, 1860. Belmont branch. This branch was organized in 1848 and eventually became the First National Bank of Bridgeport, charter #214. In the mid-1850s the vice president took over the signatory duties and the plate was altered to reflect this fact. The engraved "Vice President" seen at lower right is the only such example we can think of on any obsolete currency. Contemporary counterfeits are somewhat available but genuine notes on this short-lived bank are unique or nearly so. A great note and one that should find a happy new home with one fortunate soul.

Only two students enrolled in the school's first academic term. Folsom's Business College helped provide Cleveland businesses with qualified employees. Among the college's graduates during the nineteenth century was John D. Rockefeller, Sr. The Cleveland College became known as the Spencerian College, named after Platt Spencer, a former professor at the institution and developer of Spencerian script. A wonderfully margined example with two different colored signatures. The higher denominations get progressively scarcer. This $10 note should surpass the AU with ink $1 note that we sold for $600 in our PCDA sale.

OH-440 G62. Wolka 2824-33. The Haxby Plate Note. Jan. 8, 1855. Western Bank Note Co. PCGS notes minor stains, ink erosion, foreign substance on back. A bank that would hit the bricks in the summer of 1841. Central vignette of the goddess Aurora in a four wheeled chariot pulled by two griffins. One of only three known of this denomination, and this is likely the finest. The first time this sold it realized over $1,500 in a 2014 sale.

A lovely Gem set of fractional currency from this rare location. The Puget Sound Co-operative Colony was the brainchild of two Seattle lawyers, Peter Peyto Good (d. 1886) and George Venable Smith (1843-1919). In June 1887, the Puget Sound Co-operative Colony, incorporated in Seattle the previous month, moved its headquarters to the small settlement of Port Angeles on the Olympic Peninsula, where its founders envisioned building an ideal collective community.

Mercer & Meadville Turnpike Road Co. $1
November 30, 18??. In payment of debts due. The main road leading from Pittsburgh to Erie through Mercer, Shealeyville, Meadville, etc., seems to have been laid out when the territory was yet under the practical control of Crawford County. In 1807 the station appropriated $400 to improve the road between Mercer and Meadville. In 1817 the Mercer & Meadville Turnpike Company was chartered by the Legislature to improve and operate the road between Mercer and Meadville, connecting at Mercer with the road to Pittsburgh. in 1821 the company opened the line for general traffic. It continued to be the principal thoroughfare through Mercer County for many years, and though macadamized, was subject to the restrictions of toll-gates until quite a late day.

Philadelphia & Lancaster Turnpike Road One Share
Mar. 16, 1795. Stock Certificate. No. 903. Upper central vignette of a Conestoga wagon traveling on the improved road. Impressed seal at left. Two hard folds account for the XF grade. Made out to Frederick Kuhn of the Borough of Lancaster. Signed by William Bingham as President. The back endorsements show this was transferred to Peter Kuhn on Apr. 26, 1817. Then transferred to Biddle, Wharton and brothers on May 6, 1817. Finally on Apr. 2, 1818 transferred to the President, Managers + Company of the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike Road. This company was formed to improve the Indian trails in Pennsylvania and to form better roads to effectively make for easier travel in the fledgling state. Clear signature of President William Bingham (1752-1804) at lower right. Bingham amassed a sizeable fortune during the Revolutionary War. He was founder and director of the Bank of North America and also served for six years (1795-1801) as a Senator from Pennsylvania. He was considered the wealthiest man in the new nation at this time and he was the ultimate capitalist. His signature is quite rare and that is what makes this item so valuable. Heritage has never sold one. Stacks sold a comparable example a decade ago as part of the Coast to Coast collection. It realized a hair under $2,000 that day in the crappy post-Recession market. This is a real prize for whomever decides to bring it home. It may very well be several years before another avails itself.

Issued notes are rare as hen's teeth, with this being only one of a couple $10 examples we have seen. Newman only had a $1 note, PCGS Fine 12, and that topped the $3,000 mark. When these do appear they always bring a solid multi-thousand dollar price. This is a superb note.

Problem-free notes like the present offering tend to rapidly approach the $1,000 threshold.

We can find three other notes at this "64" grade level and they have all sold in the past handful of years, realizing between $750-$900 each.

Whether considered an Essay note or Fantasy note, the T-47 and T-48 have long been included in the 72-note Confederate type set. The Newman note, in this same problemed grade, looks as if it barely survived a major battle and it still topped the $2,500 figure. However you approach this note, all examples of this type are solid four-figure items.

These notes are not a consecutive group but they all came from the same run as there are consecutive mini-groups of a few serial numbers each. I am sure this would make for good eBay sales. Nice AU to CU notes seem to sell in the range of $75 to $125 each. That should make this lot worth......

Chemicograph Set in Unopened Envelope
A set of six Chemicograph backs with designs that were intended for the 1864 issues of the $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, and $500 denominations. Back plates with these designs were ordered by the Confederate Treasury from S. Straker & Sons of London. Multiple shipments were made but none made it to the South. The plates were then found 75 years later and prints were made. These are included in the original Chase envelope from 1959. These sell very well individually but it is a rare treat to get an unopened envelope.

An absolutely stunning wide margin pair. The face specimen is a lovely uncirculated example and the back is a lightly handled Ch. AU. In this day and age, you will be hard-pressed to find a wide margin pair with more frame lines. The face has two full frame lines at top and right. Not to be outdone, the back specimen has three full frame lines. For those who are new to all of this, wide specimens with all four full frame lines are a near impossibility to find. A great specimen pair.

PMG notes minor rust, annotation. The pencil notation is an old catalog number. Over the years so many wide margin Fractional specimens have been trimmed or otherwise altered in one way or another to make high-grade examples. To that end, you do not often see wide specimens with lots of outside frame lines. Specimens with four frame lines are virtually unheard of and even examples with three full frame lines, such as this one, are a real modern day rarity.

One could argue that Fr. 1338 appears at auction about as frequently as the vaunted Fr. 1336. In any event, this is a very scarce and underrated note.

Very well margined and essentially fully framed. Very few examples of this scarce note seem to garner the EPQ/PPQ designation. A real pleaser that is always worth a solid four-figure price at this grade level. In our IPMS sale last year, we sold a Top Pop caliber AU 55 that sold for $4,200.

In today's Fractional Currency market it could approach that level but will probably land somewhere around the lower end of our estimate range.

The aesthetic appeal of this piece is superior to most we have seen. The margins are gigantic on all sides and the centering is superb. A lovely example of a tougher note.

Pink Fractional Currency Shield
No major IPMS sale would be complete without a Fractional Currency shield. The gray shields number in the low to mid hundreds and are by far the most available. The green shields are the scarcest with about a dozen known and the pink shields are also quite scarce with a figure of around two dozen. Housed, as they all are, in a contemporary frame that was not part of the BEP issue. The shield is surrounded by black matting, which only enhances the bold pink color of the shield itself. All four of the hand-signed Colby-Spinner notes are seen, which includes the Fr. 1273SP Grant-Sherman specimen that is only found on green and pink shields, but not the gray shields. Fractional Currency shields are easily the most important and widely sought after item by both fractional and non-fractional collectors, due to their status essentially as a work of art that can be displayed proudly by the owner. Virtually always a five-figure price is required to obtain such an elusive treasure. Cut out from border as strong a pink color as I've ever seen.

George Casilear first worked for Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. In 1862 he went to work for the National Currency Bureau, which later became the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Blank face with an interesting colorful design. The spine states "Miscellaneous Engravings." The inside cover shows "George W. Casilear" with an emblem and Latin motto "HONOR ET VARITAM." This translates as "Honor and Truth." There are thirty-two pages, each with a different engraving. Most of the engravings are titled and/or described. Some of the more interesting titles are Decline of Carthage, Whalers, The Opening of New London Bridge, The King at Holyrood, The Prince of Orange Landing at Torbay, A Hawking Party, The Virgin Mother, The Star in the East, The Ommeganck at Antwerp, The Prodigal Son, and Religion Consoling Justice. At last year's IPMS we sold George Casilear's Personal Scrapbook of Engravings and Vignettes for just under $8,000. This likely won't get there but it is a really cool esoteric item nonetheless.

Tenth Thousand. Some handling around the outside edges. Otherwise, a very nice example when one flips through the pages. The plates are all present and the spine has not deteriorated at all. Recent auction results have proven how desirable these really are.

Tim Prusmack Money Art Eight Denomination Early Prototype Set
Tim Prusmack died unexpectedly in 2004. Although his artwork notes were not particularly valuable in the market place at that time, they came to be so around the Fall of 2010. It was at this time that an intrepid dealer purchased a group of sixty Prusmack notes at 1:30AM as the last lot of a major auction. He began auctioning them off and unknowingly started to create a market in these Money Art notes. More than a decade before this time, Tim's primary efforts were of a far lesser quality than are most of the pieces we have come to know and love. The present offering is an indication of what used to be. This eight piece lot of different denominations was always meant to be kept together as a set. Regular Prusmack notes these days tend to sell for between $100-$200 each at auction. As a set, with a great story to tell, these should be worth much, much more.
