2020 December USKL > Session 1 - Colonial, Continental, Confederate, Obsolete, Errors, Small Size Type, Large Size Type, etc.

Lot #81971 - Colonial Currency > Delaware - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
DE-60 20s May 1, 1758
A tape repaired center fold is seen on this challenging Ben Franklin note. The Lion vignette on the back remains bold and the all-important "Printed by B. Franklin and D. Hall" text is clear.
Grade: VF
Lot #81972 - Colonial Currency > Maryland - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
MD-70 $8 April 10, 1774
Boldly signed by Clapham and Eddis. Essentially full left indent is seen on this lightly circulated colonial.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 53
Lot #81973 - Colonial Currency > Maryland - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
MD-70 $8 April 10, 1774
A boldly signed colonial by Clapham and Eddis. There is a pretty wide left indent and the printing quality is impressive. PMG notes it has been Previously Mounted.
Grade: PMG Ch. Abt. UNC 55
Lot #81974 - Colonial Currency > Massachusetts - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
MA-158 1 Shilling August 18, 1775
This is the first of the Revere "Sword in Hand" notes and the lowest denomination from the series. It is a paper Pine Tree shilling (as opposed to the coinage) and the only Sword which uses this vignette. The other denominations use a ship vignette. The low grade is due to its heavy use in commerce as a low denomination change bill. Noted as "Laminated." This is a rare type, despite the grade, and an important Massachusetts vignette type.
Grade: PMG Good 4 Net
Lot #81975 - Colonial Currency > Massachusetts - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
MA-258 8 Pence October 16, 1778
Signed by Cranch. This is the second Codfish issue. The face plate for these extremely popular Codfish notes was engraved by Paul Revere, who also printed the faces. The backs were typeset and printed by Thomas Fleet. PMG notes "Repaired" but it must be very minor since we are having a difficult time locating anything wrong.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 50 Net
Lot #81976 - Colonial Currency > Massachusetts - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
MA-259 9 Pence October 16, 1778
Signed by Cranch. This is the second Codfish issue, with the first being from 1776. The face plate for these extremely popular Codfish notes was engraved by Paul Revere, who also printed the faces. The backs were typeset and printed by Thomas Fleet. A lovely example that sure looks like a nice Ch. CU piece.
Grade: PCGS New 62
Lot #81977 - Colonial Currency > New Hampshire - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
NH-180 $2 April 29, 1780
Hole cancel as typically seen. One of the colonies that printed a 1780 Guaranteed issue. A trio of signatures and bold printing are noted. This is always one of the more popular colonies for a type set.
Grade: PCGS VF 20
Lot #81978 - Colonial Currency > New Jersey - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
NJ-158 30 Shillings December 31, 1763
A very well signed and problem free example of this early New Jersey series. The 30 shilling and pound denominations are the ones that are not seen in high grade.
Grade: PMG Ch. Fine 15
Lot #81979 - Colonial Currency > New York - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
NY-165 3 Pounds February 16, 1771
Superb detail is seen on this condition challenged New York note that has "Splits" commented on by PMG. The state Coat of Arms shows great detail, and the signatures seen on this note are excellent. A tougher 3 Pound denomination.
Grade: PMG VF 20
Lot #81980 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 175.00 - $ 325.00)
NC-141 2 Pounds December, 1771
Scarcer high denomination note. Huge margins, deep printing and bold signatures. PMG notes a Split Repair which is hard to see.
Grade: PMG VF 30
Lot #81981 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
PA-111 15 Shillings May 1, 1760
Signed by Parker, Eddy, and Morrison. Printed by B. Franklin and D. Hall. Plate B. PMG notes Repaired, serial number & signatures redrawn. This May 1760 Pennsylvania issue is really a lot scarcer than most casual collectors and dealers realize.
Grade: PMG Fine 15 Net
Lot #81982 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
PA-126 20 Shillings June 18, 1764
Plate B. Printed by B. Franklin and D. Hall. Well signed and numbered. PMG notes Repaired, but it appears to be some minor edge strengthening. All of these Ben Franklin issued notes are highly coveted by both currency and historical collectors.
Grade: PMG Fine 12
Lot #81983 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
PA-126 20s June 18, 1764
Although there are some tears and a tape repair of the center fold, this is actually quite an attractive example of this Ben Franklin printed note.
Grade: VF
Lot #81984 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
PA-148 15s March 20, 1771

Grade: Abt. UNC
Lot #81985 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
PA-176 5 Pounds April 10, 1775
A previously mounted example from this popular red and black Pennsylvania issue. Always desirable with a vivid vignette of the Walnut Street Workhouse on the back.
Grade: PMG VF 25
Lot #81986 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
PA-75 15s January 1, 1756
Tape repair, tears. Both of these issues are primarily confined to the center fold region. An acceptable Ben Franklin note that is rich in history. The 1755-1757 series from this colony are definitely scarcer issues.
Grade: Fine
Lot #81987 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
RI-242 $1/8 September 5, 1776
A decent grade example from this fractional denomination series. PMG notes Foreign substance, which is merely an ink blob stain on the back.
Grade: PMG VF 20
Lot #81988 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
RI-285 $4 July 2, 1780
Remainder. PMG also notes "Selvage included." A picture perfect example that sure looks a lot nicer than just a lower end Gem grade.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #81989 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
SC-100 20s June 1, 1775

Series 661 5¢ 10/21/68 - 8/11/69 First Printing Replacement
This looks like a note that should be worth about $2 if it was a regular issue piece. Replacements from this abysmally common issue are actually really scarce. The PMG Population Report shows five examples of this denomination, only two of which are better than the present offering.
Grade: PMG VF 25
Lot #82190 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Series 661 50¢ 10/21/68-8/11/69 First Printing Replacement
As common as this series is for regular issue notes, it is just that scarce for replacements. There are perhaps a half-dozen known of this denomination and all but one have been graded VF or less. Past auction results that we can find have shown a PMG VF 25 that realized $3,000 in 2011 and a raw VF that sold for about $3,500 back in 2004.

Giori Test Note Thirty-Two Subject Complete Sheet
The Esylum online newsletter had a great article about Giori Test Notes, some of which is quoted here: "To understand the significance of the Giori test notes requires a little history of United States Currency. At the conclusion of WWII, Gualtiero Giori created what was eventually known as the Giori Press. This groundbreaking method allowed two-color and even three-color engraving from a single plate, in one pass. Using precisely cut special rubber inking rollers, this allowed the application of each ink selectively to parts of the same plate. Adding to the new faster drying ink and other new technologies, a new press was to be commissioned by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), many times faster than anything before it. In a strange (and still not completely understood decision, American Bank Note Company (ABN) chose American Can as the subcontractor to actually create the new printing machines. Founded in 1901, the American Can Company was mostly known for the making of tin cans and their labels. They had manufacturing facilities nationwide, but chose the Geneva, NY plant as the site for building the press. Edgar L. Pigman (1932-2008) from Phelps, NY was selected as the American Can engineer to work on the project. Mr. Pigman designed the presses and tested them using the Giori process. These plates display approximately 32 different vignettes, including portraits of Presidents Washington, Lincoln and Grant that are identical to those on the $1, $5 and $50 Federal Reserve Notes that were then current in circulation. While the presses worked fine in Geneva (making these test notes), and were delivered to DC, they were never used for making any currency that went into circulation. There is no proof the presses were ever used once they made it to Washington DC." To read the entire article (very interesting!) visit : https://www.coinbooks.org/esylum_v15n53a10.html

A rare variety of the early 1862-1863 $20 Legal Tenders. The note has great color and paper quality along with a comment of minor restoration, which I have yet to identify. Definitely a desirable note with rarity and just 15 serial numbers recorded. This is the highest grade reported for this type. It has twice sold; in VF 20 for $12,650 by us in 2014 and another Apparent 30 back in 2008 that was so arbitrarily graded it changed Track & Price. So back to 2014 for a good comparison. A beautiful $20 Gold Certificate that is graded '55' due to the minor restoration comment on back. I have not found the restoration so I know it's not material to the appearance, but the paper quality is. PMG notes: minor restoration.

A high quality and valuable 1882 Department Series $100 from the Act of July 12, 1882. Graded XF 45 and a lovely note that says "stains lightened" but I absolutely do not know why.

A lovely Gold Certificate that has the elusive grade of VF 35, often saved for the nicest problem free examples. A comment on back says "Minor restoration". This is a lovely match appearance wise for the Fr. 1214 1882 Seris also listed here.
