A pleasing VF with a different set of signers. The First National Bank of Los Angeles in California was chartered in September 1880 and liquidated in 1935 after printing $45,469,050 of National Currency. The bank issued 10 different types and denominations of notes. The bank issued National Bank Notes during the First Charter Period and continued until the end of the issuing period through these different titles shown. The First National Trust & Savings Bank was assumed in September 1927 and Security First National Bank on March 30, 1929.

There are only now 16 large notes reported from this Morgan County community east of Fort Collins. This is only the second known Red Seal for this charter and it's well used with light, readable signatures. Only 1 in 4 notes are $20s on Red Seal sheets, even a greater fact as to rarity.

Fr. 599 $5 1902ND
Dover, First NB, 1567
Top quality notes from the state capital have been virtually impossible to obtain for the five decades I've been studying National Bank Notes. To date there are only two UNCs reported and this one is the best. I sold it to my client about 30 years ago and have handled none since. If I recall correctly I paid $1,600 at that time. Small size notes continue to be available but none resemble this jewel. Back in 2016 a VF realized $881, a relative bargain. A rarity I'm proud to offer.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ    Bank Name: Dover, First NB, 1567

There is no other word necessary to describe this note other than John Hickman's favorite 'peach'. The note has it all including bold pen signatures of Jacob Krohn, President and A.J. Webster, Cashier. This is a fresh, well centered $5 Brown Back with a beautiful layout and gorgeous color. A tough bank to find from Fayette County in central Illinois. This location has only been available 5 times in over 20 years. This example has decent body and the pen signed are clear. Charles City, First NB, M1810
This bank was chartered in 1871 and many of the 46 large notes recorded came from the early printing. I am not sure if no one liked them or they did and wanted to save them. There are eight $5 Brown Backs and only the Higgins Museum can boast a finer example. This note is pen signed by C.D. Ellis, President, from 1906 to 1929 and R.V. McCarmond, Assistant Cashier, from 1907 to 1919. The engraved date is January 31, 1891. A high quality Iowa $5 Brown Back.

It has been over 20 years since I acquired a $50 First Charter from the estate of Amon Carter, Jr. and I haven't had a First Charter again, until now. This is one of four on the bank, including that $50. This note is bright and fresh and should see considerable interest that will be aided by the pen signatures. Seneca, First NB, W2952
This is the seventh large note reported on this tough bank in northern Kansas, and only three have even been offered publicly, one in 2001 and now this Brown Back. In 2005 a VF 25 realized $1,150. The left end of this note had some border design loss and it could be restored. Few would even care as this note is just that rare. Signed by G.W. Williamson, President and J.H. Cohen, Cashier. This jewel is not a Gem but definitely a jewel. PCGS notes: edge repairs, design redrawn.

Danville, Farmers NB, 2409
This bank was chartered in 1879 and has 21 large notes recorded, mostly Brown Backs. This note is the best of the three First Charters; two $10s and one $20. Wonderful pen signatures and a great 'look'. There is some minor restoration noted and it must be very minor. We sold the last Brown Back, a $20 in Fine at $3,680 in 2008, but the last First Charter sold was 18 years ago. PMG notes: minor restoration.

This has always been one of the greatest names and I'm sure the demand and price will reflect that. The note has excellent signatures that are perfectly clear. This note was the last one of its quality offered and that was in 2001; two low grade Blue Seals and a Fine $20 Value Back which brought $8,596 in 2007. Eight large notes have been reported since 2008, as that was the last issue of Don Kelly's "National Bank Notes" tome, and the National Bank Note census has the same number today.
