Lot #99307 - World Paper Money > Upper Senegal & Niger - ($ 6,000.00 - $ 9,000.00)
1a .50 Franc D. 11.2.1917
One of the rarest of the World War I French emergency small change issues is this epic type from Upper Senegal and Niger. Several years ago, one prominent authority believed that only five or six existed; that number is a little higher now. Upper Senegal and Niger was the precursor to French Sudan; the name change occurred following World War I. The Standard Catalog states that a 1 and/or 2 Francs "probably exist"; I have NEVER heard of any kind of report indicating this to be the case. PMG terms this "AU 55 previously mounted"; error label calling this Senegal.
