Denver Colorado Supply Co. 5c
From the John J Ford Jr. Collection of 2007 where they stated: "The Colorado Supply Company, Denver, Colorado. Five Cents. September 1, 1907. About Extremely Fine. Printed on glossy light yellow bond paper. 90mm by 52mm. Lithographed on both sides with imprint of Western Bank Note Company, Chicago. Printed in blue on both sides with red protector “5” in center. “FIVE CENTS” across center flanked by logos, the title curved above. With the designation “This is not intended to be used as Money” along the top. Engraved signature and machine serial number. The back with red “5” between “GOOD FOR/IN Merchandise,” the four corners with ornate scrolls. No.14009. A choice example from this most prolific of store scrip issuers in the early statehood period. This note lands within another panic era when clearing house notes were issued to
prevent bank failures. Most notes seen of this type are in wretched grade. This is Choice for any Colorado scrip of this period. There are a few folds and a very slight stain at the upper left edge. These are not as well appreciated as they should be, but the Schingoethe notes in the July 2007 Memphis Sale showed renewed life with many excellent results. This is a tremendous series to collect with much upward potential.

Fort Lyon Sutler's Check 10c
This note realized $1,380 in Stacks 2018 Baltimore sale. At that time they stated: "Uniface. Printed on bond paper. 110mm by 61mm. Lithographed in blue and red without an imprint. Red "SUTLER'S CHECK" curved as an undertint in the center. Within a plain blue border frame, "GOOD FOR/TEN CENTS,/PAYABLE IN MERCHANDISE" across center. At the top, "FORT LYON, COL. TER." in bold lettering, just below serial number space and part printed date "186_". At the bottom left, large block counter "10 Cts." Space to sign note at the lower left. Durand COT-11, listed as Rarity 7 (1 to 5 known). Really a piece of scrip more than a check. Had this note been signed, dated and numbered, it would have passed as money. We have only seen notes from this series as unsigned Remainders and we believe all are. Fort Lyon is the name of two different U.S. Army forts that operated in eastern Colorado beginning around 1860. The first fort was originally named for Virginia governor Henry Wise but was renamed in 1862 in honor of Union General Nathaniel Lyon who was killed at the Battle of Wilson's Creek in Missouri in 1861. The fort operated in its original location until a newly constructed Fort Lyon opened near Las Animas in 1867. Our research leads us to believe these notes likely date to the first location. Bright paper and just a few light creases are observed". The Richard Horst Collection of Colorado and Western notes.

Undated (circa 1890s). PCGS notes splits and tears. Hugely margined and reasonably intact when one considers its rarity. If this note played Monopoly it would have no worries about winning the $10 second prize beauty contest card. That is of little matter due to the fact that this is the only one we can find and it is on New Mexico. The only other Southwestern Mercantile note we can find was on Jarilla, New Mexico. It was only a little better and it sold for $1,495 years ago. The Richard Horst Collection of Colorado and Western notes.

This is the only piece of scrip we have seen from this location. A great piece of Obsolete scrip from this little known town, which is now known as Orogrande. The town's name was changed in 1905 due to the discovery of a gold nugget the size of a man's finger, which triggered a short-lived gold rush. At its peak, between the 1880s and 1920s, it was a gold, silver and copper mining center. Ex-Western Frontier Collection. The Richard Horst Collection of Colorado and Western notes.

The face and back obligations say they were not to be used as money. The notes were specifically GOOD ONLY FOR MERCHANDISE. Printed on yellow paper, without an imprint, in blue with a "5" counter in the center of face and back. Titles, denomination and obligation on the face are within fancy bordering. The back shows two large dies flanking the central cartouche. Noted with some "Repaired Edge Tears," but with an attractive appearance. New Mexico scrip notes such as this are rarely encountered." From Heritage Auctions 10/2015 this note realized $423. At that time they stated "This is another New Mexico territorial period note that is steeped in history, but with its details quite mysterious. One well-documented fact is that Jewish merchants thrived in this region for decades and were instrumental in the financial development of the region. That included the iconic Levi Straus (though sadly, never a paper money issuer). Staab is a footnote name, but this is a confirmed Jewish family in the area, and Abraham Staab was the prominent member whose fortune was made in providing Civil War supplies to the Union. The family became much more prominent after the war and into the early 20th Century. The note was lithographed by Thalmessinger & Cahn, 310 Broadway, N.Y. on white bond paper. The main vignette at center shows a bold eagle, shield and banner. A woman's vignette is at lower left, and vignette at the lower right (mostly missing) is unknown. The large red "$1" protector in the center is flanked by smaller color dies. A chunk is out of the right end of the note with 85% remaining. Noted by grading as "Piece Missing at Right; Rust Stains." Difficult to estimate since it is not whole, but it is still a historic Jewish merchant note from the far west that is likely unique. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic." This note realized $587.50 in the Heritage Eric P. Newman Collection in 2015. At that time they stated "This is from the Western territorial "Not Intended to be Used as Money" genre which was engraved on the note for Federal compliance. Printed on yellow bond paper in all blue by Western Bank Note Company. The style is similar to the Colorado Supply Company note. Company logos flank the red "5" in center. The back has a "Good for Merchandise" designation and red "5" in the center. Noted with a "Tape Repaired Tear at Right." New Mexico change bills are much rarer than Colorado types. This is restored, but it is still attractive. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society". The Richard Horst Collection of Colorado and Western notes.

($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Santa Rita Gilchrist & Dawson Inc 25c
From the 2007 Stacks John J. Ford Jr. Collection of 2007 where they stated "Printed on glossy yellow bond paper. Medium size scrip note. 119mm by 64mm. Lithographed on both sides with imprint of Western Bank Note Co., Chicago. The style similar to Colorado store scrip of the period. Printed in blue on both sides with red protector “25” in center. Straight titles across top center. Across center, “TWENTY FIVE CENTS” on shaded base and flanked by company logos. The designation “This is not intended to be used as Money” at top. Engraved signature, “J.B. Gilchrist” as “President” and machine serial number in red. The back with red “25” and “GOOD FOR IN MERCHANDISE” the four corners with ornate scrolls. No.2371. Durand-Unlisted Issuer. high rarity7 1-3 known. The first note from the issuer we have seen. These notes on New Mexico are much, much rarer than Colorado with only a handful of issuers seen so far. That is logical due to New Mexico’s even sparser population than Colorado in this time frame. This note is an exceptional example in rarity and grade. There might be some handling under scrutiny, but at first glance appears perfect. This is an absolute miracle of survival to exist at all and in stunning condition. A treasure for the New Mexico specialist". The Richard Horst Collection of Colorado and Western notes.

The consignor received this star note quite by accident while at the Treasury Dept in Washington, DC. He was denied the choice of getting a star note from an opened pack of a hundred new $5s the cashier was paying from, due to bureaucratic BS, so he purchased the next two notes available. Much to his surprise the second $5, this note, was a star! From the Steve Whitfield Collection.
